Adhesive for rope clutch?

I removed a rope clutch recently and need to reinstall. The clutch was screwed into a metal plate glassed into the deck. There is no through deck bolting.

The removed clutch had some sticky material between it and the deck.

Any idea what this is and do I need to replace it?

Butyl tape is a sealant. Important to distinguish sealant from adhesive. If you can't find butyl tape, you can use polysulfide sealants such as Boatlife's Life calk, I use this or butyl tape on all of my hardware bedding applications. Silicone based sealants are not appropriate for this type of application. Finally, do not use polyeurethane adhesive sealants such as 3M 5200, or even 4200 for that matter.

If it was grey and stick Butyl tape is a possibility. It is a good water resistant caulk material to reduce the possible leaking issues. Good wheel the hardware is held in place by a fastener (I.e. the bolts into the internal plate). The butyl will serve to stop water intrusion.

Hello,

My guess is that the sticky material is sealant to prevent water from getting into the deck.

If, as you stated, the clutch is screwed into a metal plate glassed into the deck, and there is no risk of water getting into the deck and damaging the deck, core, or anything else, then you do not need any sealant.

If it were my boat I would use a good quality caulk around any fastener. I just can't think of a reason NO to use caulk.

Your boat, your choice.

What's wrong with 4200? I usually lean towards this over BedIT when the bolt will be spinning

You should consider Tuf Gel or other galvanic isolator between the SS fastener and aluminum plate.
4200 around the perimeter of the stopper could make it tough to remove for service.
