Has anyone added wheel steering to this boat? If so, was it difficult? I'm looking for source for the steering gear...any ideas?

Why????

This has been covered lots of times before so I'd suggest a cruise through the archives. A wheel on a sub-30 foot boat is not a particular advantage and can be a detriment. Expensive: starting at about $1,500 before labor if you insist on having someone else do it. Available from Edson. Makes it harder to get around a cockpit not designed for it. Tiller can be swung up out of the way when anchored, the pedestal can't. You loose the feel and enjoyment of a tiller. Save the bucks, buy something nice for the boat and varnish it's tiller.

Good point Sam!

Dan: Sailor with wheel want tillers, sailors with tillers want wheels. Not really, but several posts about this. My suggestion is to buy a boat with a wheel and sell your boat. My take on this. Everytime I sail a boat with a tiller I just love it. You can feel it better and better control. I would not consider a cruising boat with a tiller for myself. When you have guests aboard a tiller is a royal pain. The big advantage is when you are in port or at anchor.

EDSON

Ask Edson for a catologue. They have configurations for all you need. I am busy asking the weather Gods to warm things up, so I can sail again. Your problem is easier to fix than mine. Good Sailing s/v "LOTUS"

Wheel

I have a wheel on my 1990 27 and like it very much. (boat came with wheel) Want to counter some of the neg. comments about room in the cockpit. The wheel comes off very easily and allows better movement around the cockpit Just be sure you secure the key in the wheel slot until you put the wheel back on. Good luck. ("GLORIA")

But Larry,

your 1990 boat and cockpit were designed for wheel steering. Not sure that was true of the Cherubini. The link below is a Cherubini 27 with a wheel. Were the cockpits different between the tiller and wheel boats? From above(pg29.jpg) the cockpit looks to be shaped for a wheel, has the 'T' shape. Looks just like my H37C. I often move my wheel to the rail when at dock or anchor. I really liked sailing a Tartan 10 with a tiller but I would miss my instruments, drink holder, and table now that I have them.

I have a '78 27

And thought about the same thing. But the cockpit is not condusive to a wheel. It's just too small. In addition you need to look down underneath. If yours is like mine you may run the risk of Water getting in. The rudder post houseing would have to be compromised. Better look reall good.

You guys are gonna love this!

Cherubini 27's like my 1981 came with a 24" wheel. I would like a BIGGER wheel! 30 to 36" diameter maximum! I just had my rigging tuned and I can not believe how well she sails on a close reach into the wind and how minimal the weather helm has become. So, a larger wheel is low on priorities now. Even though I could easily unscrew the bolt and hang it on the lifelines when I am on the hook I never do, and I would truly miss my teak cockpit table/adult beverage/peanut

I had one

I owned a 79 27' the previous owner installed a wheel and all the stuf was in the aft lazeret they took the tiller off and clamped on a pitman gear mounted in well and made brackets for the wheel shaft out of the same support system bolted on a 20" edson wheel they bmade a seat over the works somewhat like an island packet has worked well and the boat responded as well as a tiller hope this gives some hope kd

The OTHER option

Edson also lists an application for a'fisherman'-type wheelbox for the 27 which covers the useless 'lazzarette' locker and leaves the whole cockpit clear. It does require a traveller located NOT across the back of the cockpit (and remember I said to put it across the front edge of the cockpit for best performance!!!!!). I strongly recommend this worm-gear steerer instead of the pedestal for all the reasons people here have said they do not like the pedestal. The wheelbox (easily fabricated out of teak, then oiled) makes a perfect spot for a helmsman/commander and the whole cockpit is open for everyone else. In this way it's the best of a tiller, but a wheel, and a wheel, but out of the way. When you contact Edson ask for the aft-mount worm-gear steerer configuration, tell them I referred you, and hopefully they will know what you are talking about. I think it is their item no.745. Look at this first before you decide... please. It might be cool after all. JC 2
