I just purchased a 1984 Catalina 22 that does not have stanchions or lifelines but I'd like to add them. How difficult of a project am I in for? What should I consider?

Think about this one again

Hi Rod I have really thought about this one and read a lot of different opinions on this idea and have come up with the idea that the lifelines would do nothing except get in the way, They are only tall enough to hold in a very short person 18 to 24 inches and cut down on the very limited deck space that we have. I would use jack lines if i was in a situation that I was concerned with people going overboard. Just one person's opinion good luck I am looking forward to hearing other thoughts on the idea. Jack Lines?

Herb, I saw another thread with that suggestion too. But I'm not sure I know what Jack Lines are. Can you give me some more detail? Thanks! Rod

Jack Line Photos

Would any one have photos of the jack lines in use on their boat? Thanks

Let's specify your needs.

Do you have small children aboard? If so, I don't think jack lines alone will be sufficient. What you may deisire more is basically an aft pulpit and life lines run from the aft pulpit to stanctions on each side mounted at about where the cabin starts. This creats sort of a barrier to help keep your children aboard. Not as foolproof as jack lines, but readily available and more convient than securing a strap. This will have great physcological benefits making sailing with children more comfortable. Also, make sure you install a ladder. Catalina Direct can sell you one and their technical department can probably provide fairly accurate placement measurements. Ladders are necessary for children and adults. And jack lines are also used on main sails, so if you get some pictures of a line attaching a main sail to a mast, don't be surprised.

Jack Lines

Check out page 778 and 779 of the 2003 master catalog of West Marine for seeing jack lines and their installation, approx.

Specifying Needs

Although I won't have children on the boat every outing, I will have some small children on the boat occassionally. I had considered just adding a stern pulpit to see if that provided some psychological comfort. I did have my doubts about the lifelines but do feel they at least present the feeling of safety.
