Adding Spring Cleats

I'm adding cleats to the toe rail at midship where cleats should be. I'm planning on screwing them into the side of the toe rail lip. Any thing I should know be for doing so? With the different types of metal cleats out there, any recommendations on which type of metal to mount? I'm not sure what the toe is made of.

Backing?

You say you are going to thru-bolt, but what about the exposed nuts? These will be devastating to any finger poles or other boats that you raft with. It may also reduce the capacity of how much line you can put on the cleat. On my boat (Legend 37) that has the extruded aluminum toe rail, there is an overhang created by the toerail. Midship cleats are mounted there. You may be able to drill vertically through the lip and thru-bolt the cleat on the underside with large washers for backing. You may also need to mount the cleat on a teak "riser" to raise it from the deck to clear the top of the toe rail. Otherwise, it will chafe the lines.

Shackle

That is a good point. Sounds like to much trouble and too permanent. Perhaps I will just rig up a snap shackle through the toe rail hole with some type of buffer between the shackle and the toe rail.

Use the whinches

I use the winches of my 28 to secure the spring lines. I tie a bowline in the line and loop the line over the winches. It has worked well for 5 years.

Toe rail cleats

West Marine item 492887 might work for you if you do not wish to have a permanent installation. (or track cleats if you have a genoa track - same idea)
