I have sailed my 37-C for 5 years and am currently upgrading standing rigging, I'm thinking about removing the boom and adding a roller furling to the staysail. I would appreciate any info from one who has already done this with any comments about problems, etc. Thanks Tom (tneal@cybernet2k.com)

UK Sailmakers "Furlboom"

I just finished reading an interesting bit of information on UK Sailmakers "Furlboom." Go to their web site at uksailmakers.com and read their October 27th newsletter for more info. "Furlboom" seems like it answers a lot of concerns about safety and performance as voiced by many folks on this site. Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility

Good idea.

Hi Tom, I am also considering the same for my H37C. But I had planned to keep the boom so I won't lose "self-tacking/jibing". I have seen this on other cutters. The staysail sheet comes back to a block at the aft end of the boom. So you end up with a loose-footed staysail. What I cannot remember is how that sheet is secured so that you can now trim the staysail. Or rig the current outhaul back to the cockpit for unfurling. Then leave the staysail sheet as it is today. And I'm concerned about having the furling line going across the deck to the toe-rail. It will be at a height of about 8 to 12 inches, perfect for tripping over. Possibly bring it straight back along the boom to a block and then ??? Maybe we'll get some more ideas. Then there's the cost of modifying the staysail. I'll probably wait until time to replace the staysail.
