I am adding a Plastimo roller furling unit to my 26.5 for the upcoming season, and had a question regarding drum placement. The sail loft that is doing the alterations to my heasail told me to mount the drum inside the anchor locker. I would prefer to mount it above deck. I was wondering if there is enough room to still open the anchor locker doors if the drum is only slightly above the deck. Would rather not make alterations to the anchor locker doors for clearance, or have to mount the drum way far off the deck. Any other 26.5 owners with advice and or photos, would greatly appreciate it.

Why inside the locker?

Why is everyone wanting to put the drum inside the locker with all its problems? What's wrong with at the usual bow where the sail is high enough to see under and it doesn't drag on the life line? Does putting a hole in the locker door allow the drum to submerge in water or is lack of spray better? Is performance increased or, what am I missing?

CDI furler is not in the anchor locker

It is attached to the bow chainplate located in the foremost part of the locker and passes through a molded hole for the forestay. The furler is up and outside of the locker and mounted just high enough so the foot of the foresail clears the pulpit and lifelines. Installation is real clear on website. You bring up a good point, I see all these beautifully rigged boats with the head of the foresail mounted close to the deck, wrinkled and rubbing on the pulpit and lifelines. Why not mount it to clear these obstacles, avoid rubbing wear and allow you to peek under the sail? Makes sense to me. Glenn WindWisp 26.5 Hunter

On my 26.5...

... the roller is high enough to just clear the anchor locker hatches. No way can you put the drum inside the locker. The control line must run straight and unimpeded along the stanchions to the cockpit. With the drum inside the locker, control line routing will be a nightmare.

Barry, E-mail me please...

Barry, Hey how's it going. I lost your e-mail when my hotmail account crashed. Would you please e-mail me at svwalkabout(at)hotmail(dot)com. I had to write my e-mail address this way as the last time I wrote it the proper way, the spammers picked it up and I got junk mail for three months. Also, send me your phone number and I will call you as I wanted to talk furlers. I just got my Snapfurl 700 (Schaefer) in the mail and wanted to see if there was a general consensus on how long the link plates should be to get the furler off the deck. Regards, Clayton S/V Walkabout
