I have a 73 Oday 22, 600# shoal keel, I've read than many of the 600# owners added 200# of lead shot to increase the keel weight to 800# (poured right into the bilge).
I also noticed that on later ODay 22 models (perhaps the ones with the swing keel), Oday increased the weight to 800#.
So I'm wondering if the original 600# is considered too light even by the manufacturer. I'm thinking they were designing a trailerable sailboat so weight was a consideration, and they later realized this design flaw and corrected it in subsequent models.
Even is that is the case, will an additional 200# enhance the sail-ability/safety of the boat? I'm more interested in that then comfort, but does adding more ballast adversely effect roll rate as related to comfort?
thx!
