Hunter 310 -
I would like to add an auto pilot system to my 1999 Hunter 310. There is a keyed stub shaft that extends forward of the front wheel shaft bearing. I think this is meant for an auto pilot drive system. Does anyone have such a system on a Hunter 310, and if so what is the brand name and model? Does the system work well under all conditions? Any info on any type of auto pilot system for a Hunter 310 is appreciated.

Autopilot

Hi Ken, I installed a wheel mount Raymarine ST4000 (it has been replaced with a newer model) on our 1989 H28 and was very pleased with its performance. It should fit your boat and handle it in most mild to moderate sea conditions. It took me about six hours to install using standard tools.

You may be in luck. Raymarine has upgraded its S1 system with the X-5 and the earlier model is being sold through E-Bay and reputable electronic vendors for around $750. The package includes the wheel drive, computer box, control unit, flux compass and rudder position sensor. Previous price for this unit was around $1,100. The hardest part of the installation is choosing the location of the components and the running of the wires. This unit will serve your boat in light to moderately heavy seas. If your boat has a pedestal box you will need to drill a hole slightly larger than the size of the motor to accomodate the wheel drive. The instructions are fairly good and the tech support is adequate. The company does stand behind the product and its warranty. At the current price the unit is a good value for the money.
