I have a 1990 30 ft Hunter Sailboat with an inboard Yanmar twin cylinder diesel. There appears to be no mechanical ventilation system in the engine compartment (located below the steps to the cabin). The compartment emits an odor that is not too pleasant. I would like to add a ventilation system but where does one exhaust the system to? I don't believe the Hunter 30 came with a built-in mechanical ventilation system. Any ideas where the exhaust can be discharged to? Has anybody added a ventilation system to their motor compartment?

Suggest that you check your exhaust elbow for a hole rotted through. This will give you a strong odor of exhaust.

You need to add a exhaust blower with tubing to exit out the rear of boat,I have a 3'' tubing like on a home laundry dryer in the engine compartment hooked to a marine exhaust blower and the tubing runs under the cockpit to the rear and exits in the rear of
my cockpit under my seat on my walk through stern.
You need to find a way on your boat to some thing like mine and it was factory installed from Hunter on my 2007 H-36.
It does help exhaust heat any any odor for sure.

Installing the duct requires pulling the entire floor from aft cabin routing duct fron top engine compartment to thru bulkhead 3" hole saw and I installed 3" rule blower fan in rear compartment on bulkhead over diesel tank then added extra thick spacers rubber bumpers to rear seat openings to percolate out heat and open seat after shut down and let fan run for awhile to pull heat out cabin befor bed

I did much the same on our '91 30T. I mounted two blowers, one intake and one exhaust and put the intake and outlet vents on the sides of the walk thru transom. My batteries were in the aft seat lockers so I didn't want to heat the lockers. We ran the blowers when motoring and for a while after getting back to the slip. Helped especially when we would turn the air conditioner on. The rule blowers were mounted in the two aft seat lockers. I used two blowers because I found it easier to run 1.5 inch flexible corrugated tubing out of the engine compartment, under the aft berth decking, thru the bulk head, then up past the fuel tank and into the lockers. I seem to recall the 3" vent was going to be a real challenge so I adapted the 3" rule blowers with pvc fittings to fit the 1.5" vent tubing. I used 3" tubing to the vents in the walkthrough and added a "riser" loop that would keep water out of the tubing and blower in following seas if a wave were to have washed over the walk thru transom (not likely, but was easy to do). That restriction is why I decided to use an inlet and outlet vents. Cool air was forced in and hot air sucked out. Both vent pipes ran by the prop shaft and up into the engine compartment. The suction pipe went to the top of the compartment to get the heat and the cool air inlet stopped just above the tranny. I probably should have run the cool air blower pipe right to the back of the Balmar alternator to cool it better. I'm considering adding a second blower to our h36 just like Nick said above to bring cool air in as well. PM me if you want photos or more detail.
Ralph, the engine cover is awesome...looks like it gives lots of access when removed.

Be careful with the hose and know some one who had the the metal wire inside the hose
some how wrapped around the drive shaft.

Yikes! Good point. On my 36 the 3" hose is tie wrapped only a about 6-8 inches from the prop shaft. may rework that!
