recently purchased a spinnaker for my H-30 and as best i can tell, thre sin't an extra halyard for raising anything other than the main. Did the Hunter 30 originally come with only 2 halyards? One for main and one for headsail?. I do have a hood roller furling which i think was standard on this model boat. I havent hauled my big butt up the mast yet but looking through binoccalurs, I dont see a sheeve or block to run a halyard through. Any comments or suggestion apreciated.

adding a (spinnaker) halyard

You will need more than just a halyard for your spinnaker. A fixed bail with a turning block will also be needed to run the halyard through. If there is no spinnaker sheave at the masthead the easiest way is to cut an entrance slot in the mast about 4 or 5 feet down and an exit slot about 8' off the deck. From the picture it appears that you already have a couple of holes drilled for the bail.

No such thing

as "standard" on a Hunter, or any other maker for that matter. What was standard was whatever they could get cheapest on that given day. There were certain commodities that were common usage like the Bomar ports or merriman cleats, and sometimes Merriman pedestals and sometimes Edson. Whomever they could get the best contract with. Your mast appears to be Kenyon, which was what Hunter commonly used at that point. Your masthead appears to be the same as the one on my Hunter 33 from the same era. There was provision for two halyards forward and two aft. There may or may not be sheaves provided for the spares. My 33 happened to have the spares so I have two working halyards and two spares which have come in handy on any number of occasions. As for the furler being "standard"? That sort of equipment was invariably taken care of by the selling dealer or the new owner himself. I think at that period cruising design was more common usage than Hood. As for the spinnaker bail which is not at the top of your mast, it also may not have been "standard". I am going to have Garhauer make up a new bail for me that will be a bit longer to keep the block forward and away from the furler swivel, and somewhat stronger to take the strain. I'm sure the individual price would drop if two were ordered at the same time as opposed to one. I'm going to guestimate between $50.00 and $100.00 just based on what other custom stainless items from Garhauer have cost me. If you're interested contact me at samlust@verizon.net. I'm assuming the bolt pattern is the same, and I can't think they would be different.

Ours rides a bail

And the halyard returns outside the mast, as do all of them on our '77 h27. You definitely want the spinnaker to fly from a bail in front of the roller furler/forestay. Then it is your choice whether you have/mount a turning block at the masthead and run the halyard down inside the mast. In any case, you could order the bail, and install the bail, block and halyard in one trip up the mast. If there is already a spare block for the halyard, you can run it down nside the mast. If not, you can measure for one, and drop the halyard outside the mast to use until you get the hardware, and make a second trip up the stick. By the way, we had a rigger prepare the lines for our cruising spinnaker, and her took the trip up the mast for us. David Lady Lillie

It's difficult to see detail in your picture but it appears that the block carrying your spinnaker halyard is resting against the headstay/furler. If you suspend that block off a bail mounted above and forward it would allow the block to clear everything.

Poor man's halyard

If you don't want to dismast to install the sheeves, you could always strap one to the front of the mast using a flat steel clamp, as you have holding the shaft hose from leaking.

Spinnaker halyard

Thanks for all the input and most of all the photos. Turns out , there is another sheave foward, but that means cutting an exit slot in the mast. Thinking that might create a leak / chafing problem, I might run it external with a bail and block. Thanks again

If that second sheave is next to the first, it's definitely not a spinnaker halyard sheave. It is for a second genoa halyard. Spinnaker halyards must exit above the forestay not below it. That is why a bail is needed. The bail will carry the spinnaker halyard above the forestay.
