Adding a Genoa to a Hunter 27 Edge

I have a 2009 Hunter 27 Edge with the stock jib for the headsail. I was considering switching to a genoa sail but have no idea what gear I need to purchase or how to rig it. Any advice or experience with changing to a genoa would be appreciated.

Not very practical.

The outboard-shroud design of your boat basically limits you to a non-overlapping jib. Any overlapping genoa would have to wrap around the shrouds and spreaders, creating a horrible sheeting angle that would limit your ability to sail to windward well.

In addition, the layout of your lifelines would make this very impractical.

That's what I thought. The spreaders go out very wide so I wondered if it would even work. A few years ago I read where someone had added a genoa to a Hunter Edge and I was curious how they did it. I'm happy with the jib setup, I just thought it would add some versatility with a genoa.

Get a tape measure maybe 2 and measure the rig . pull the sail down and attach tape end to haylard and attach other tape to sail foot location pull a cross deck and see what size sail will still clear stays work to jib cars maybe a deck sweeper with window will give you more sail area

I worked with Hunter on this boat as well introducing at Annapolis. You already have a 110 jib lapper if memory serves me correctly... There are several things going on here. First this is a B & R rig with no backstay. The main is much larger than a normal main as the thought was adding addl. sail to the main thus giving it more power. I forget but when adding all the sail area together, it does add up to what I believe was a standard main and a 135-140 genoa. If you do not have roller furling for the jib, add that. In addition, the spreaders are swept back and thus you can pulle the jib in tighter vs. straight out spreaders. finally the lifelines, layout of the forward deck and so forth will not allow for a larger genoa anyway.

I would add an a symmetrical spinnaker for lighter airs. As for showing the boat in Annapolis in 2009 at the big show, I left the dock with a 75 hp on the back end and when challenged, put the pedal to the metal and came out roaring rocking the boats, docks and throwing water onto people and onto the harbor patrol boat. Went past the Academy sea wall and then heard that wonderful siren with Harbor Patrol behind me along with DNR and Coast Guard. You can only imagine the number of tickets but I talked my way out of that laughing so hard that I could not believe it myself. That was a good way to end the Annapolis Sailboat shows after 30 plus years displaying at that show.

Great information Crazy Dave. One of the reasons I wanted to post here first was because I knew it likely wouldn't work because the wide spreaders and the shroud that goes outside the lifelines. I read on this forum a few years ago that a person added a genoa to their Hunter Edge and I was very curious how he made it work.

You're correct the Hunter Edge it has a larger mainsail and larger jib. Much more sail than you normally see with a jib setup. It is somewhere in-between a jib and genoa setup. My only complaint is I'd like to have the option to sail in stronger winds with the front sail only (just for convenience with the rolling furler). I'll occasionally take my boat out over lunch for a quick sail and don't have time to mess with the mainsail. So I just quickly unfurl the foresail. Since the jib doesn't come past the mast the wind pushes the bow making it drift and very difficult to keep in the wind. Not a big deal since I only do this when I'm taking a quick trip out in stronger winds.

By the way, I can only imagine the people's reaction when you threw water up on them. I also have the 75 hp Evindrude and I can't believe the wake that boat puts out. It's definitely a fun sailboat.

I still laugh at that leaving the show as a dealer for the last time. No tickets which was surprising and if they only asked how many years I had been there, heck they might have thrown the key away with me still locked up.
