Adding A/C to a Hunter 33.5

I have a '92 H33.5 and I would like to add air conditioning. I've tried the portable unit that sits in the hatch and it's just not what I want. I want a built in unit. (is anybody interested in a portable a/c, I have one available) My questions are these; Where do I put it? I've seen 2 others that were installed under the nav desk. This prevents you from sitting straight, facing aft, at the nav desk with your legs underneath but I can live with that. The problem I'm finding is that all of the a/c units I'm finding are too big, according to the specs supplied. Not real big, just a little too big. I've considered putting it under the port side setee but I really hate to loose the convenient storage. I have not yet measured to see if they will fit. Are there any other locations?? Where is yours??? Did you install it or did it come with the boat?? Do you think it was installed by Hunter? Will 12,000 BTU's be enough?? (Chesapeake Bay) Thanks, Tom s/v Orion's Child

Maybe an Option

I have a 30' same vintage and I put the A/C on the port side of the aft berth. The berth is extra long and I made a cabinet for the A/C with space left for some storage. Mine is 12,000 BTUs but you can never have too much. I am not sure of your layout but I ran the ducts through the cabinets in the head then under the nav station in the settee.

adding a/c

i recently installed 16000 btu in my hunter 30 and very pleased. don't know your layout but in my hnging closet tere is a shelf that was a perfect fit and it was mid ships across from head. I also added the heat strip which i am glad of now. last week it was 43 f outside and i sat snug inside at 68 F. the uit is made by ocean breeze in stuart florida. great people to deal with and over 30 yrs experience in marine units. staff was more than knowledgable abt my boat and very helpfull . Both before and after the sale. ubit was easy to install in just 2 days.

33.5 AC

I have a 1994 model 33.5. Had a 16K unit installed in the haning closet in the rear berth. A large vent runs through bulkhead into main saloon. Another vent runs into rear berth area (important due to residual engine heat after pulling into your slip) and another 4 inch duct runs all the way to the V-berth (not cheap to have done). Unit works great in our Texas heat, no problems in 8 years. Hated to give up rear closet, but it's the best place for it. A unit will NOT fit under the settee. Holding tank and hot water heater take up all the spaces big enough for the AC unit. Put some insulation around the compressor part of the unit, and it will be very quiet, I did.

Thanks for your input

I appreciate all the help. Dan, Chuck and Dennis, your layouts are different than mine so I'm not sure I will be able to convert your ideas to fit my boat. Thanks for the input on BTU requirements though and I will consider your ideas the next time I'm at the boat. Shaun, I was talking about my port settee, it is completely void of any built in equipment. The starboard, u-shaped, settee has my holding tank, my refrigeration and my water heater. There is no room left on that side. I'll have to measure the space under the port settee the next time I'm there. I've put shelves in the aft hanging locker and we use them all the time. It's where we keep our clothes while sailing. I don't think I could give that up. Jeff, No I haven't seen your installation before but it is exactly what I was talking about. Actually, it's even better. I really like the finished look you have by running the cabinetry all the way to the cabin sole. That looks really sharp! The other installations I've seen under the Nav station only went down as far as the top of the settee. Yours looks so much better. I'm still leaning that way. Thanks again for all the help, Tom s/v Orion's Child

Jeff, a couple of questions

Jeff, What kind of access do you have to the unit for service or repairs? Do the new panels come off fairly easily? Do you remember the manufacturer and the BTU rating? Thanks, Tom

Fits Great in My 31

Mine is under the first seat on the dinette. Fits great and only lost one storage place. The unit is by Mermaid and is 12k BTU. Works great and is ducted to the V berth and 3 locations in the cabin. One on the side of the cabinet that its in, one to the top of the surface in the galley by the dry storage and one pointing up in the corner of the dinette. Good luck and have fun. Capt. How did you do it Capt. Paul?

I too have my AC(16k BTU) in the first Seat of the dinette. I have been unable to figure out how to pipe it into the vee berth. The cable runs are so small. Also i would like to know how you got one to the top of the surface in the galley by the dry storage? I have two on the end of the first dinette seat and on facing forward of the same seat. I hhave also wondered about getting on to go behind the ice box so I can feed the rear quarter berth. Thank You Paul
