I have an 8hp Nissan outboard with electric starter. I would like to add an alternator to charge batteries while out for two to four day sails. Two questions: 1. Can I add one if I have an electric starter? 2. Any clue about the cost of parts? I'll install it myself. Thanks, Tom s/v ChrisAnna

No charge?

Hi Tom: Can't believe an electric start OB doesn't have an alternator. Never worked on Nissans, but have seen small car alternators Goldberged onto outboards. Look real good, and make sure they're isn't a charging ckt. Good luck red

Limited power

This is what Nissan told me: "The alternator output is going through a red wire (with in line fuse) from the rectifier (changes AC to DC) to the starter solenoid and then to the battery through the battery cables. Please contact me if you have any further questions. Garland Lewis Product Specialist" It's enough to run the lights but will never charge a battery. I'm also curious if there is a kit for an alternator with more umph! Tom/DFW
