Greetings; I read with interest, Dave of Mancos' recent comment regarding using two deep cycle batteries in his 23. My H-23 has the o.b. motor, water jug, the battery,and galley, all on the port side (I assume this is a typical layout), which causes a noticeable list when moored. I load the starboard side to counter this to keep the boat level. I've considered relocating the battery beneath the v-berth and possibly adding a 2nd one. Any suggestions? I thought about it once
I thought the area on the floor under/behind the companionway would be a good place for two batteries. All needed was a piece of plywood with two cutouts (one for each battery) and some way to secure it to the plywood bulkheads on either side. The idea was to keep the wire runs between the batteries, the solar panel and the switch panel as short as possible. That would work for me because the charging wire from my solar panel goes into the hull at the top of the companionway. I may yet do it, but not now...time is in painfully short supply. Somebody posted a project on this.
He mounted both batteries in the v-berth and was much happier with the added space under the settee. He also added a small charger, and run everything back to the cockpit to hook to shore power.
