Foot blocks - good for ASym Spin?

Hello PaulJ, Just wondering: Can you use the foot blocks to turn Asym. Spin sheets to the winch? I presently have a 150 Genoa but am seriously considering reducing to a 135 or even 110 and adding an A-spinnaker. I find the 150 is just too much sail most of the time and I can't furl it down enough without losing shape. Our normal sailing weather in the summer is usually 10-20 knots. I am thinking that with the 135 furled down to about 95 - 100% I will be able to use it like a working jib but keep the kite for those days when there is 5-10. Great pictures! Chris

The 309 has factory installed Foot Blocks.

I was looking at a new 309 for sale at the club today. It's got factory installed foot blocks. I don't think the foot blocks would be suitable for a spinnaker though. Chris

The reason I installed the foot blocks

was I have a asymmertrical-spinnaker-drifter with an ATN snuffer sock and needed to replace the existing tie on with 8mm line blocks which came with the boat. Since I was allowed to use a block, Genoa sheet line and winch on the 309 at the boat show and it worked top drawer I thought I would also use the blocks for asymm set up.....time will tell I ran the sheet loads for my 135 genoa which came in around 2450lbs and that's how I picked the Lewmar blocks. The load on the asym sheet line at 8 knots or so was 950 lbs so it looked OK. paulj

Location of padeyes for Assym. Spin. on 310

Hello Paul, I have to agree with Ray, I am seriously thinking of adding the blocks in the same set-up you have. My concern for using the footblock for a spinnaker would be the lead on the loaded sheets. Does this cause the sheet to wear on the cheekplates? In the drawing for my Catalina, the padeyes for the sheets in the optional spinnaker package are located about 1 1/8" inboard and about 22.4" forward of the stern pulpit flange, i.e. forward of the primary winch. I have to be honest, I have very little experience with spinnakers. I am looking at developing the capability because I want to reduce from a 150 genoa to a 135 or maybe even a 110. The 150 is a bit too powerful for the wind off Halifax here most of the Spring and Fall. I am not even certain I would keep the 150. Definately not, if I install the Asym. spinnaker. Thank you for sharing your handiwork. It is much appreciated. Regards Chris

Soon as the weather gives me a break I'll check the AYS-SPIN sheet angle

Inspection Port on Starboard Plan

Hello Paul: On one of your photos I notice what appears to be about a six inch deck plate located just inboard of your diesel fill line. Did you add this to the boat? Do you use it for inspection purposes? My 310 does not have a deck plate in this location. Cheers, Chris
