I want to know what the water temperature in my water heater is so I will know if I need to run the generator to heat up water for showering. Has anyone added a thermometer with an outside temp. display?

Why don't you turn on the water and either feel it or put a thermometer under the stream?

Sounds like a good idea to me. Done it in the chemical industry. You should be able to find a dial thermometer with a pipe thread at the base. Swap a fitting on the hot water heater with a tee so when you screw it in the probe will extend into the tank interior. Running the tap would waste the precious hot water and make up for the loss by diluting with cold.

I'm with Steve; the simplest way would be to open a tap and feel the water. It will either feel warm enough or too cold. For the purpose of taking a bath that would be all the information I would need.
