I've got a '95 H-29.5 to which I'd like to add a Simrad WP 10 wheel autopilot. However, when I look at the bulky steering console on the H-295s (which I otherwise like)I don't think there's room between the wheel and the console to fit the autopilot (the Simrad WP 10 calls for 6.5 inches). Is this also true for the Raymarine wheel pilots? What modifications have to be made to the steering console to accommodate a wheel autopilot? Any tips from do-it-yourselfers?

I installed the ST-4000 on my 29.5...

by drilling a hole in the console for the drive motor. Search the archives for the following thread which discusses it further: ST 4000 Installation on Hunter 290 Submitted by Michael on 03/26/2002 at 05:59PM regarding Hunter 290. Here's my response in there, but the whole thread has some ideas (The Raymarine drive ring that attaches to the wheel has a hex shaped hole in the back that needs a bracket to keep it from turning. Thats what the hex discussion is about.):I installed the same autopilot on my H 29.5, and the pedestal setup is very similar. I used a 3/8" hex head bolt, and a nut and washer on the inside and outside. Works great and was 50 cents, not 50 dollars. You can't even see it once it's installed because of the close clearance. As for the hole for the motor, I bought the correct size hole saw for my drill, and measured several times before drilling. Don't forget to look at what is behind where the hole will be as the motor extends in quite a distance. E-mail me if you have further questions at mulf@comcast.net I tried to attach the direct link also.

ST-400 Advice

Also added the ST-4000. Raymarine wants you to install a bracket to hold thedrive ring in place, but I and others have had no problem with using the motor in its hole as the "bracket." It's a real treat having the autopilot when single-handing. Be sure to heed Mulf's advice about checking where you're drilling. Also, I suggest running all your instruments to multi-contact connectors to facilitate removing instruments and troubleshooting without having to remove the pedestal top every time.
