Add swim platform

Has anyone added a swim platform to their sailboat with a reverse transom? We have a 1984 Hunter 34 and it would simplify getting in and out of our kayaks and swimming with a platform. Thinking something along the lines of 12" x 48" made from starboard so it would blend in. Not considering teak. Concerned if it would ruin the appearance of the transom. Would drop the idea completely if we thought that would happen. Would of course have to look professional in quality.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I was dissuaded from starboard for ladder steps on the grounds it is treacherously slippery and can't readily be glued. Could maybe be cross hatched.

I am also interested in improving boarding in general, how about a sketch of your idea.

I would not even attempt it. I'm old school, I still have a routine to inflate and deploy an Avon dink that takes around 20 minutes. I have thought about Davits but refuse to add things that may solve one problem but create another.

Good morning.

Attached is a very rough sketch of my concept. Maybe, as I envision the platform being something like 4' wide and 10" to 12" deep, it is more like a big step. I don't want it protruding out too far, thus the narrow idea.

Thanks fro the reply. Unfortunately the Ohio shore of Lake Erie is a bit far afield for me. For example, if traffic is good, we are 6 hard hours drive to Erie, PA.

Thanks everyone for your help, especially the reference to the Catalina solution. I tend to forget to look to other boats for a solution. Lesson learned!

I plan on building a folding swim platform for my H30 out of white pvc board. I would use 1" thick pvc and cut 1-1/2" strips and sandwich them together with glue and use stainless all thread rod to clamp together like a teak platform. It will be about 4' long like yours and maybe 18" wide. It will be hinged to a solid 2" thick piece of teak that has been cut to form to the transom and through bolted to the transom. This way the platform would just have a straight edge that the hinges are attached to. I plan to use ss chain to support it in the down position on each side with a piece of solid teak on the underside of the platform for the chain eye bolts to attach to for stability. That's my plan anyway :) Either that or find an old used teak platform to modify.

Here is the one I added to my Catalina 30. I am very happy with it and it does several jobs. A easy on off platform . A quiet back porch for a drink to watch sunsets or sunrise. It makes getting in and out of the dingy much easier. It is really nice when you have to hang the motor on the back of the dingy. It will work as a way to carry the dingy from place to place.

You must have placed some stout backing plated on the inside of your transom to manage the weight. Any issues with a following sea? Like the idea especially the boarding ladder, wonder if a folding platform could work?
What about the CG naming requirement on the stern?

Yes it has a 1/4 stainless steel backing plates on the inside of the transom and It appears to be plenty strong as the Transom and the rear section of the lazarett is tied together with plywood that hold the propane tank storage. I had a Mechanical engineer approve it. (My Son). I have no concerns with it in a following sea it sits a foot or move above the water. my exhaust never goes under in a following sea I don't think this will. It could fold but I will use this to carry my dingy at times so it would then have to be supported from above instead of below. There has been much thought into this platform. It make getting in and out of the boat so much easier.
