Add Reefing Points to Old Main or Buy A New Main?

What is the philosophy and relative cost of adding a line of reefing points to my old main sail vs. just buying a new main? My main is over 10 years old, but (I think) in adequate shape. I am a day-sailor andlight cruiser so a little lost efficiency doesn’t bother me.

Adding a Reef

Keith, It is relatively straightforward to add an additional reef to an existing mainsail and any local sail loft should be able do do it for you. Depending on the size of the boat it could cost anywhere from $150(30ft)-$450(50ft). What you need to consider is if you want to invest that money in a 10 year old sail or maybe it would be better to put it towards a replacement sail. It all depends on the condition of your old sail. I would say that you've probably gotten your money's worth out of the original sail if it has lasted that long.Thanks,Bill ColomboDoyle Sailmakers
