I'm looking for info and experience with aftermarket UV protection for a roller furling jib. My recent acquisition appears to have no sun shield on the jib and shows a little discoloration along the leech. I've heard there's a clear self adhesive product out there somewhere. Any ideas?
Thanks

How About A Sock?

I put one in. This site has it, but you need to e-mail them with specifics for a quote. After I replaced my sacrificial sun cover for $500 after two years, I figured it was a good investment. BTW, you need a spare halyard. Rick D.

Sleeve . . .

If you have a decent sewing machine you can make one with a kit from SailRite. We made one for our Catalina 16.5 and it came out great. I just added a small block above the forestay and used the spare cleat on the mast.

We also made a tiller cover and main cover though those required a a new/better sewing machine as the sunbrella canvas is tough! 3 layers was almost more than a brand new singer could handle.

Adhesive backed "Insignia cloth"

... a lightweight dacron cloth used to make logos and number on sails. When used in panels can be applied as a UV cover to the leeches, etc. Can be simply pressed down to adhere but should ultimately be sewn down. Lasts about 2-3 years when not sewn, much much longer when sewn.
Is white and lightweight.
Go to www.sailrite.com for more info.

Why not just take it to a sailmaker and have them

sew on the "sacrificial" cover?

Halyard hoisted sock

I had sumbrela fabric added to the edges of my jib so that when furrled the sail was protected. The sail maker did a great job and I am happy with the sun protection & original roller simplicity. But it made the sail too heavy for light air down wind use without the whisker pole. So when it comes time to replace the sail I'll not get the sacrificial edging again. But I will purchase a sock and spend a little more time putting the boat away at the end of each sail.

thanks for Add-on vs. Sock ideas

Great info folks! I'll be able to stop in at the Sailrite store in Annapolis on the way to the boat tomorrow! I'm thinking sock at this point, especially if the kit they offer is do-able. That way if the jib is too old to go beyond another season I haven't put $$$ into it and I can have protection for the replacement. And the performance issues are sidestepped as well.

Hope to be in the water in a couple weeks!
