I need an extra set of hands. Sail on small inland lakes. Don't need to integrate with GPS. Just need help in sailing a strait line while I raise motor or adjust sails. What accessories do I need to order to install on H26. Don't want to get a unit and then have to wait 2 months for mounting hardware. Can I run power right from the battery with an inline fuse? Help would be appreciated. Seems that small Simrad TP10 is well within displacement, etc.

It's simple to install!

Dick: The Simard products are easy to install. The take off of the power should be taken off the same point that any of the other instruments are taken off of. If you do not have any instruments then any other breaker should be OKAY. I do not think that taking it directly to the battery is a good idea. There is no way to turn off the power to the unit.

Fittings?

What fittings from Simrad do I need to attach to tiller? to the boat? Why not an on/off switch next to remote motor ignition. Seems like it would be a lot easier to run than clear to a panel and back to the stern.Wires could stay in compartment behind lower birth.

I'd suggest that you contact them directly.

Dick: I'd suggest that you contact Simrad directly and ask these questions. I am not familiar with your boat so I cannot really give you the type advise you are looking for. I think that you can download the manual off the web site too.

Autopilot Parts

Dick, If you have a H26, then you will need a tiller bracket (120mm) and a pedestal (90mm) -- the electrical plug comes with the unit. I have a similiar unit made by Navico before they were bought out by Simrad. I installed the pedestal on the floor of the cockpit just in front of the swim ladder and the electrical plug in the same area on the side. This may sound like an odd place, but the idea came from a H26 owner in England and has worked great. My power comes from the battery with an in-line fuse and the on/off is via plug in or out! You will love the convenience of having this extra hand - especially when motoring - when hanging on to the tiller can be less than exciting. I ordered the whole unit from Defender Industries at Defenderus.com. I have B/W copies of the installation if you want to pursue this type of installation. Contact me at FraboniMN@aol.com Ron

Same Here

I installed the Simrad 10 last year in the same manner as Ron's and am very satisfied with both the product and the installation. The direct connect to the battery (w/fuse) works fine and I verified with a Simrad technician that this would be OK. Installation took about an hour. By the way, thanks for the photos Ron..they were a big help.

One More Thought on the Subject

I "temporaily" installed the tiller bracket with a stainless pipe wrap having a thick rubber liner until I got the location just right for drilling holes. But the wrap has worked so well and holds the bracket in place so firmly that I no longer plan to drill holes or permanently mount it. The type of wrap I'm talking about is about 6" long and has adjustable hose clamps at both ends.

Why to the swim ladder side?

Does the device work only to one side? Why not mount the pedestal in front of the motor, instead? Is install instruction long? Could anyone fax pertinent pages to 515 265-9139?

Response

The device can be set for either port or starboard operation. There is floor area for mounting on the swim ladder side - With the engine well the starboard floor isn't adequate. If you wanted to mount on the starboard side, I think you'd have to mount in the cockpit seat. Also, the port location is directly above the battery. (I'm speaking of a '97 h26 here.) If I can find my set of photos, etc., I'll fax them to you.

See Photo Forum

Dick, I installed a Raytheon unit two years ago on my 26. I pretty much documented the installation in the photo forum. Ron sent me his pictures and it was a big help. You almost need to install from the port side because of the motor well. I had remote controls for the motor on the starboard side already, so there wasn't any room any way. The mounting post unscrews, so if you are using the swim ladder, you can get it out of the way. We have never bothered to do that though as it doesn't take up much room. I ran a sperate breaker for the power. The autopilot will be a large current draw, and you would want to be able to turn it off. You could install it with an inline fuse, bur then the deck plug would always be hot. If you get any moisture under the cap, it could cause a short or run your battery dead. Do you sail on Red Rock Lake? We bought our boat from Sail Iowa, and used to sail there. We have sinced move to Wisconsin. Mike Pajewski H-26 "Loon"
