I was looking for a hot knife for cutting Sunbrella. Has anyone tried to use a knife like
"Hand-Held-Electric-Rope-Cutter" on Amazon for $46 as opposed to those selling for twice as much? Or, any other suggestions?

Thanks

If you are going to pursue different projects bite the bullet and ..

...buy the real thing and you will never regret it.

I've cut with....

... a soldering iron and still use it...

....to install common sense fasteners and to cut sharp curves but the hot knife with the foot is just so much faster and you can cut on any surface with it since the foot keeps the heat off the surface.

I have the Harbor Freight hot knife, which is fine for what I have tried (which is basically just to cut synthetic lines, and I also used it to "iron" on some plastic to repair a small gash in a roto-molded kayak).

I tried the soldering iron and got frustrated and bought the Sailrite unit yeah a bit costly but well worth it I have used it to cut Sunbrella for a dodger misc projects and a top for our patio cover. Again well worth the price.

I have the Harbor Freight one and it is good for cutting and sealing line, but would be totally inadequate for use on Sunbrella. I know the Sailrite one is pricey, but their stuff if you use it for the recommended purpose is always good.

My wife is a wizard with a sewing machine and I recognized early on that it would be worth dropping the $$ to buy her the real deal Sailrite machine for boat projects. After all, you get what you pay for, right?

I do not know why I tried to cheap out on the fabric cutter but let me tell you, a Harbor Freight hot knife will not work on Sunbrella. At least, it will not work like a knife-- to use it to cut Sunbrella and seal the edges, you need to push and hold the knife down on the fabric for a few seconds on each spot, making your "cuts" one short blade length at a time rather than by drawing the knife across the surface. This takes forever and makes it really hard to cut straight lines and impossible to cut clean curves. After hearing her explain this to me in absolute exasperation while trying to cut fabric for our new bimini cover, I quickly ordered the hot knife sold by Sailrite. It cost way more than I wanted to pay but it works perfectly and she enjoys using it so I consider it money well spent.

Have you used that for cutting fabric? It looks like it would work great for cutting and sealing the ends of synthetic line, but it seems like it would have the same limitation as the harbor freight model for cutting lengths of fabric.
It might. Probably does. But its a rock star at cutting line! ;^)

I have a number of hot-cutters. The solder gun like in post # 9 I have is a Weller 8200, 100/140 watts. The blade in post 9 does not fit the 8200, but you can drill out the two blade recpticles to accept the "rope cutting" blade in # 9. Yes, it can cut fabric, but you'd probably want to keep two cut edges apart, away from the heat. Better to use a differne , flat, blade though.
