Acquiring a trailer for Catalina 270

I'm in the market for a Catalina 270 wing keel, but none of the ones currently listed for sale on the internet come with trailers.

- I would like to spend as little money as possible. One C270 owner that I talked to said he spent $5700 to have a trailer custom made. Is it possible to get one cheaper than this?
- Is it possible for me to buy a production boat trailer instead of a custom made one?
- Could I use a trailer from a C250 wing keel (250 has 1 inch shorter draft and 1 ft shorter beam)
- Any other tips, suggestions or advice?
- To adjust the trailer to fit the boat, will I initially need to have the boat travel lifted onto the trailer?

The boat displaces about 6,000 lbs.

Thank you!

That's a good size boat to be trailering - the C250 trailer might not be up to it, you would need to find the specs. Actually, $5700 sounds like a good deal for a new trailer for that boat. Doubtful there's a production trailer or if it would be any cheaper - but there are companies that have made them before for that boat, they would be your best bet. You might be able to find a used one, probably not exact but close enough. Or you could pay someone to move it - can be cost effective depending on your situation.

The place that was previously $5700 is now $6150 (base price). When you add a keel guide and launch wheel, the price goes up to $6810. I assume sales tax would be tacked on which would push it over $7k.

Honestly, I am surprised you think this is expensive for a new custom boat trailer. Now, that's it's more than you want to pay, that I can certainly understand...

The only way to bring down that cost would be to find a used trailer that could be modified to fit that boat. That is not difficult to do. Used trailers can be pretty inexpensive. Then you will have the modifications which shouldn't be a lot really. I'd look for a boat trailer that is rated for at least 7000 pounds with the forward winch already on the trailer. That will help with keeping down the modifications costs. You need to know how it needs to be designed...

Reach out to the site I recommended. They might be able to rebuild an older trailer that they have on hand for you

The Catalina 250 wing keel trailer is not recommended for the Catalina 27 wing keel. I helped Ron Frisosky designed the Catalina 250 trailer both wing and water balllast boats
