I have a 1984 h31. The specs say the mast height is 47 feet. Is that true and is that the hight above the water line or from the mast step. I will be transiting the ICW this spring and need to know my limitations. If 47 feet is from the water line then what would be an acceptable bridge height that I could expect to clear with out any possibility of a mast strike.

Safe height - slightly over 47 feet

Sorry I couldn’t resist. I googled “Bridge height on the ICW” and the responses I got showed a minimum height from 62 to 65 feet. I’m a west coaster, but I would assume there are many side trips to take off the ICW that would put you in less clearance. Naturally, you will have charts of the entire route that you will take – right? All the bridge clearances are on the chart.

A quick trip to the boat would get a DEFINATE answer(which you'll need!). Tie a tape measure to the main halyard(or mark & measure the halyard) and just add the dist to w/l and figure in masthead gear/antenna. Just did this on our 26' and came up with a suprising 42.5' (ant top to w/l) which is now clearly displayed on the mast. Good luck and safe trip. Michael

Measure it!

Don't trust a spec sheet.... my boat got a new rig about 10 years ago, and there's no guarantee it's the same dimensions as the original. Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8
