I recently purchased a Hunter 20 and it does not have sternrails. We will weekend on Lake Cumberland and would like to mount a grill. The grills I have looked at on various web sites are all mounted to the stern rail. Is there a grill out there for people without sternrails? If I go another route...How expensive are stern rails? How difficult to mount? Just one more...It came with the loop over boarding ladder...How much and/or difficult to mount is a transom boarding ladder? Or do the loop over the transom ladders work sufficiently? Thanks, Gary

Couple of options.

Gary: There are a couple of options. First if you want a stern rail TIQ (Tops in Quality) can make one for you. The other option is to mount a BBQ on a post (like for a flag) that can be removed. www.topsinquality.com

another option

The typical BBQ's sold for sailboats can be mounted on all sorts of different mounts, some requiring rails, some not. Check with West Marine. And, if you need something temporary (or maybe permanent), a nice little Hibachi in the cockpit ain't half bad...or expensive.

Here you go

Here is a link for a Magma deck mount. They also make a "stand-alone" mount - so that you can use the BBQ off the boat. If the link doesn't work correctly, just go to www.westmarine.com and search for magma http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/commerce/command/ProductDisplay?prmenbr=201

rod holder

You might consider mounting a deck mounted fishing rod which Magma makes grill mounts for.

We have a H23.5 and have a Coleman camp stove that works very nicely as an addition to the single burner in the cabin. We se it up on the cockpit table when we are inport or at anchor. Works really well and isn't very expensive Mike S/V Sail La Vie

All kinds of grill mounts available

Rail, fishing rod holder (not many of those on sailboats though), deck, and one that can be installed into fiberglass on the gunwhale or the side of the boat. Check the Magma catalog...there's one inside the box with every grill. Your local boat store may not stock them all, but they can order the one that works best on your boat. Just remember that any open flame or charcoal fire must always overhang the water, so you should never use a grill in the cockpit. Grease fire flare ups in grills are common, and the last thing you need is for wake or waves to to spill a flaming steak or burger all over your gelcoat.
