While replacing exhaust elbow the front of muffler (orignal bad shape) broke off. Bought boat 100 miles from home and need to get it back soonest. Two questions: 1. Can I just bypass the muffler with hose from mixing elbow to exhaust thu hull? 2. Can u access the exhaust thru hull to disconnect the hose/muffler from it without removing the fuel tank?
Thanks

I have an 1981 H33 and I am assuming that the 78 hull is very similar.

First: The "muffler" is really a waterlock which gives the cooling water that is mixed at the exhaust a place to collect when the engine is shut off, so bypassing it with a straight hose could allow the water in the hose to backup into the engine under certain conditions of heel.

Second: The through hull is accessable through the starboard seat locker, if you have a water heater it is aft of it and there is no shutoff the hose clamps to a fiberglass fitting molded into the hull (at least on the 81).

I replaced the stainless steel "muffler" in my boat with a round Vetus waterlock and it fits forward of the fuel tank.

Email me directly (n624ma@charter.net) if you need more info.
