Just purchased 1993, 3 stateroom model and still poking around trying to find out how some of the stuff works. This one was built in France and serverd in the Mooring/Footloose charter service. Thus, no holding tank. I received the owners manual the nice people at Beneteau USA copied for me, but it is lacking any detail on where stuff is like plumbing, holding tank (if it had one), and other things. Where would be the best place to install the holding tank. And is a holding tank the only way to go to meet Coast Guard specs? I plugged the shore power cord in where I dock her, and started looking for the AC lights. I don't think it has any provisions for AC. I don't see any recepticals for ac. Is it possible that all the shore power does is provide power for the battery charger?

keep looking

Kerry- Congrads on your new boat. I am petty sure it has a holding tank and I am petty sure that it has a few lights that run on shore AC. Start on deck and find your fuel, water and waste fillers. These are round, slightly raised disks four to six inches in diameter. They will be marked (maybe in French). Follow the lines below deck and you will find your holding tank. It is very important that you know were all your tanks are and that the lines and inspected and in good shape. Unless you plan on keeping your boat three miles off shore you are going to have to have aa working holding tank. Next check your AC panel. It very likely has a master "lights" switch. Turn that on and I think you will have a few lights. The AC panel should help you turn on just about everything without using your "house" or DC system. Kerry one question . . . this is a petty nice boat, whom did you purchase it from? If you got it from a broker have this person how you how these things works. You really need to know these things before you go sailing or you might find yourself in a bit panic not knowing how your systems work. Again best wishes with you new boat. --Dan

Moorings Boats

Kerry, Welcome to the wonderful world of Beneteau ownership. It is doubtful that the manual that was sent by Beneteau was actually for the boat you have. Beneteau manuals are, for the most part, worthless. Usually a collection of reprints from suppliers. Remember, this vessel was assembled to Moorings specifications and there probably never was a manual for your boat specifically. These boats are specked out to reduce maintenance and many destined for the Islands did NOT have holding tanks. Chances are, there were no AC recepticles either. Charter boats are not chartered to folks who sit at the dock. Depending on your experience or inclination, start at the distribution panel and trace the circuits. If this is not something you want to do, get an electrician to do this for you. It won't take him long. Do the same with the plumbing. Don't be surprised if you do not find a holding tank. This is not uncommon. You will probably find many other things on your boat that do not jive with the manual. Look at this experience as an adventure and an opportunity to get to know your boat inside and out. This is a good boat and with a little work and a bit of money, it can be a great boat. Remember, you probably paid a lot less than an owner specked boat. Jon McClain s/v Parrot Tales, B321

No holding tank?

Are you suggesting all the human waste generated at the BVI goes into the water? In US waters, there is a 3 mile offshore requirement for dumping waste. Don't you anchor near where you dive when visiting BVI? Are the anchorages just big sewage lagoons?

No Holding Tank!

Dragonfly, Its possible! There have been several posts on this and other sites about Beneteaus that do not conform to US standards for head disposal. Several B440s come to mind. All were are French mfgr charter boats.

No Holding tank

It absolutely has no holding tanks. The Moorings is a large chartering company that actually has Beneteau build the boats to their specs. Some are referred to as M38 for the 38 foot Beaneteau. The one I purchased also has no ac electric for lights and other ac accessories. What I need to know is where to install the holding tank(s) on the 400. I am thinking the compartment forward of the forward head. This would put the tank about 2 feet above the top of the bowl. Also, any links on how to install, ie all the parts and pieces needed. I have found a few sites, but invite the experts opinions. I am going to attempt pulling the gel cell house batteries today. They are located under the starboard berth. I want to try and verify if the charger is working. Any suggestions?
