If I have an AC generator, should I opt for a 110-volt power? What are the advantages of AC power vs. DC?

Watermakers

Rick, I have a Spectra Newport 400. It makes 17.5 gals an hr. I run it up to 2 hrs a day when I want water which gives me 35 gals. less the back flush of about 3 gals., so I net 30 gals. +/- a day. This allows me opt splurge on water & even wash the boat. It uses 12 volt power so I have the option to use 12 volt battery power or 110 from the generator or alternator when motoring the boat. I could also use shore power, but you do not want to make water in an oil rich environment like a harbor. The Newport 400 comes with a remote control unit & will back flush itself every 5 days so you do not need to "pickle" the unit when not using it. It is also possible to mount it as a "package" on by "components". I bought the unit, installed it myself & had the dealer start it up to activate the warranty & determine that I installed it correctly. We don't use it a lot, but are happy with it. Good Luck, Gordon Myers, s/v Utopia III, a h450

Spectra ??/

The Spectra sysems seem to be extremely complicated. If I am going off into the wild blue I would be concerned about all the electronics that could go poof...Mechanical I can fix, electronics are another think...Then there is the price. The last quote I got on a Spectra 150 was $5000... There has to be a better answer

At Least I Didn't Need A Watermaker...

...this trip. I am in Cat Harbor, Catalina Island. A non-NOAA-forecast storm came through last night and slapped us around pretty good. We, fortunately, are in an all-weather harbor, so just had wind to deal with. The guys on the windward side got their *** kicked. 10' rollers in Avalon harbor. Wind somewhere gale-force. Anyhow, I won't be back on the boards since the whole harbor is sitting this out and going back to the mainland tomorrow. Sure am glad I had my Origo heater aboard! Rick D.
