We have a Hunter38 (2005) that we purchased a little over a year ago and were wondering if anyone performs routine maintenance on their AC units. Seems as though the previousowner never touched them - some basic questions such as: should they get routine maintenance like the units at your house?; does the freon need replacing on a scheduled basis?; are any or all of these things that you do personally or do you call in an boat HVAC company?
Thanks for the info and responses

The best maintance that you can do for any AC unit is to clean the air filter every month. If your unit doesn't have a filter install one on the return side or intake side. If not they clog and shutdown.

ditto..Clean the filter regularly .. your use will determine the frequency.. AND clean the inlet strainer regularly.. My unit runs a lot and a monthly filter change/cleaning and sea water strainer cleaning is good for my use. A quick check before a cruise is always good so that there are no surprises.

Jeff,

Another maintenance item I perform a couple times a year, is when I clean out the raw water strainer, I disconnect the hose at the pump and connect a garden hose and flush out the lines going to both air conditioners. This flushes all of the mud and silt out of the lines. If the flow is reduced, the units do not heat or cool as well.

Not to hijack this thread, but my AC system has a single pump and strainer serving both units. They were made by Groco and the strainer is glass and has a funky looking tool which looks like it would loosen the top of the strainer unit.
I was hoping to clean it out but I am unsure as how to open it and I don't want to damage anything? Anyone have this unit?

Ours is the same way - one filter which services both units. Our cover is plastic though, not glass. I use one of those rubber jar openers to get a good grip - just ensure that you close the intake valve, otherwise it becomes a nice little geiser!

Thanks Jeff,
I am wondering what the little tool is for?

Good question on how to oil the motor. On my Cruise Air it looks like the motor is mounted on the outside of fan housing. I can see no way short of removing the entire unit to get to the bearing on the inside of the fan housing.
