AC for the A/C

I am the last slip on the dock at my marina. Because of this I have only 118 volts at the dock receptical and at the outlets inside the boat (new shore power cord). When I turn on my A/C the voltage drops to 108 volts at the dock plug and at the A/C outlet inside the boat. I'm using an inexpensive multi tester to test the voltage, sorry no amp meter. I am assuming this voltage drop can't be good for the compressor so I shut down the A/C. What can I or the marina do to boost the power?

Larger wire needed.

Their is not much you can do to correct the voltage drop as it stands now. The marina can do a major upgrade of increasing the cable suppling power the your end of the dock or you can add a buck boost transformer to your shore power connection. Either way gets expensive. One other way is to reduce the size of your A/C unit or change the A/C unit to 240vac it requies less current, same voltage, but you still have to deal with the voltage drop. The only correct way is to have the marina increase the size of their cable to your power post. You haven't mention how far away you are from the main power source and the size of the exsisting service cable suppling your dock power post. Min. sould be 100 amp with #2 cable suppling your dock power post. If that is already the case then you need to go to a size larger (150amp 2/0 cable) or maybe two sizes larger 200 amp 4/0 cable). I have seen some that were wired with # 6 (50amp)or #4 (70amp) and that was to small. It still is the marina that has to upgrade.

49 out of 50

I don't know how far, but I'm slip 49 out of 50 slips. Will the voltage drop hurt the A/C?

It Will Definitly Not do it Any Good

Not a good thing for your compressor at all. Are you at Guiseppis?

Giuseppi's Wharf

Yes...the marina is known for it's power problems. Since they don't charge extra for electricity, I don't think the owners are willing to spend the extra expense to upgrade the system just so we can run our A/C and run up the power bill.

Thought So

Your slip must be close to a buddy of mine Rich Vanderburg. I was thinking of moving over there when they raised our slip fees here at Eglin 25% at the beginning of the year. I was thinking about Light House Marina as well. If I do move I think I am going to join Fort Walton Yacht Club and keep the boat there.

Rich Vanderburg

When Rich returned from the Bahamas he relocted to the new marina addition next to Giuseppi's. I hear they have good shore power and good prices. I would move, but I love my end slip. I would love to move to FWYC, but it's to far from Bluewater Bay and I hear they have a waiting list. As far as lighthouse point goes, I ran aground in the middle of the bayou trying to get there. A gravel barge captain told me you have to stay right to make it to the head of the bayou.

Rich is a Character

I have not seen him since he got back. Our wives worked together about thirteen years ago in Virginia. There is a waiting list for larger boats but they have a couple of slips that my 23.5 would fit The junior progam is really great we though about joining last year just for my daughter. We are looking for a house out in BWB I figured if I was going to drive as far as Eglin I might as well go on over to FWYC. Right now we are just about across the street from the marina and it is way too convienent to move although I bitch about the way they increased the price on us, all of the power boat traffic, and the leftovers from the fish cleaning station.

Come join us

Since the marina next door expanded, Giuseppi's has lots of open slips that start at $120/month. My previous boat was a H23.5 Had alot of good times on that boat.
