AC Condensate drain into bilge

The AC unit condensate drains into the bilge leaving about 1-1/2" water constantly in bilge. Has anyone rerouted condensate drain to shower sump, sink drain or used other method of eliminate draining into bilge? Jerry Clark sv Persistence

What we did

I didn't like it either. If there was a/c water in the bilge, I didn't know if there was another leak somewhere else. With no other previous information, we decided to install a sump, identical to the installed shower sump, in the bilge, run a hose to the sump from the condensate pan, and run another hose to the shower sump for pumping over the side. At first we had a problem, because the pan hose was not consistenly on a down slope, but one of those shower curtain rod plastic covers fit perfectly, had little weight, came with a slit to permit easy on and off, and provided the needed center support. The system has been running in the Florida heat since May with no trouble (knock on fiberglass). Our dealer arranged for the installation - I would have messed it up. Al

Use a condensator.

See "condensator" under Accessories on the Mermaid site(Related Link). This will work with any brand of A/C. It sucks the water out of the pan with the discharge cooling water. I have never had water in my pan.

Yes, ran hose to shower sump

There was an extra intake on the shower sump pump so I drilled an access hole for the hose and tied into it. I also used a t-fitting to tie in the refrigerator drain hose. The bilge is now dry if it doesn't rain.

Ed - A Condensator ?

Ed: Never heard of one of these, but looked at the web site and saw what it looked like. Do you have one on your boat ? Does it work well, or even half way well. Jeff

condensator

We use a condensator. Installation took about 15 minutes, and I did it myself. We have no water in our pan. It works on the venturi (sp?) effect. No moving parts. I recommend it.

"Ditto" on Condensator

I also installed a condensator on our H-356, and it works great. Hard to understand why this isn't standard procedure from the factory! Before intalling it, I not only had lots of condensate water in the bilge, but also would usually end up with residual water from the a/c drip pan spilling out onto the floor boards when sailing. Now ... we're dry as a bone!

Would it work

Would the condensator work on other brands of air conditioning units?? (I would think so)

Condensator is Brand Agnostic

yes ... the condensator should work on any brand of ac that uses a pumped water system for cooling.

condensator

The condensator will work with any air conditioning unit. There is a hose that leads from the seacock to the ciruclation pump. Then a hose that leads from the pump to the AC unit. Another hose that goes from the AC unit overboard. 1/2 inch if I remember correctly. The condensator splices into the overboard discharge hose. Off the top of the condensator there is a 1/4" hose that goes into the pan. When water is flowing through the discharge hose, a suction is created in the 1/4" hose and that will empty the pan.

Thanks for the info on Condensator!

I'm going to get a condensator and put on prior to spring. Jerry Clark sv Persistence

Went cheap route

I attached a one-quart plastic (see through)bottle to end of condensate hose from frig-- through screw on cap/lid. Water drains into bottle vs bilge and can dump (just unscrew bottle leaving lid atached to hose) when neeeded, which is not very often. I usually dump it into the toilet as extra fresh water flush. Seems to work = no water, no odor.

AC Drain

The way to go is a tie-in with the shower sump. You can purchase all the fittings at West Marine. If needed, I kept the original receipt for the hardware to do the job. In reading the AC owners manual it specifies that the condensation drain must not be lead into the bilge. I cannot understand why Hunter does not follow the manufacturers instructions and "run" the drain the proper way. Also, the nipple on the shower sump is there to tie in the drain. Good Luck!

Hey Jeff,

I think you got your answer. My condensator works very well. The pan is always dry because there is always a vacuum at the drain hole. I can see where an installation with a bad slope might not work as well. But you should never have so much that it sloshed over the sides. The only installation problem I can foresee is if the drain tube on the corner of the pan is a different size from the Mermaid. Then you might have to be creative in matching up the tubing sizes.
