Is there any concensus on which brand and type of hose is the absolute best, most odor resistant hose for waste? I realize there's a lot more involved in controlling odors but it can't hurt to use the best materials to begin with and my hoses need to be changed out due to odor permeation. Money is no object in this case.

Yes, and it's right here on this forum. I apologize for not recalling the name, but I'm sure if you look thru the posts on this part of the forum you'll find it.

I'm sure that somebody will come up with the name. As I recall, this hose is very difficult to get on the fittings. Most people try heat which helps but a good trick is as follows. Go to your local Autozone, Advance or what ever, and get a properly sized tailpipe expander. Some of the stores will actually lend them to you. Use heat and the expander, it will make the job simpler.

101 is the black. Im replacing mine now with them and its a nightmare. I think there is something to say about hoses that you can actually work with. I am heating them up but im having to cut pieces of fiberglass out to complete the job along with extra 90' degree elbows.

I dunno how many times I've posted that some nominal 1.5" PVC thread-barb fittings are actually 1 5/8"...you can't get a 1.5" hose onto 'em.

Go to your local Autozone, Advance or what ever, and get a properly sized tailpipe expander. Some of the stores will actually lend them to you. Use heat and the expander..

Do NOT do that! It can dimple the fittings, which will can prevent 'em from sealing. Check the fittings OD and replace those that are larger that 1.5" WARM the hose--being careful not to over heat it--and lube both the outside of the fitting and the inside of the hose with dish soap, or better yet, K-Y. I've posted this a zillion times too!

And I can't count the number of times I've warned against trying to bend hose--ANY hose--tighter than it wants to bend willingly...warned especially against heating it to bend it...and recommended cutting the hose and inserting inline radius fittings instead.

Peggie thanks for mentioning the use of fittings for tight turns, spent yesterday wrestling with new hoses, my old Y valve was an inline design but the new whale diverter forms a T and no matter what I did could not get a bend that wasn't putting the hose under too much strain.

If I didn't need the Y valve for a run off shore a straight run would be easy but a fitting to make something approaching a right angle bend will be great.

Just looked it up. 101 is black, 102 white. Thanks for the help and thank you Peggy for the tips on what not to do. Can't wait to do this job :cussing:.

What about Raritan Saniflex Odor Shield? Any user expereince?

It is certainly much easier to work with, but I've not been using it long. It is perhaps one of the easier hoses to kink, only because it will let you bend it with a light touch. It shouldn't kink if handled with respect for it's minimum bend radius.

Butyl rubber is generally permeation resistant, but that's not the same thing as years of user expereince.

______________

Practical Sailor will have an article out next issue, pretty much repeating what has been said in this thread. The test is only 1-year old, so only the cheapest hose has failed. The only thing I feel like repeating here is Peggy's thoughts on hose barbs; if they are correct, every thing is good. If they are wrong... we warned you:naughty:.

Boil a pot of water. Put the end of the hose in the pot for approx 2 minutes. It will soften it perfectly, and it will slip right over the fitting. Works much better than heat guns, etc.
