I have sold my H26 using this site and am about to purchase a 1993 H33.5. The new boat has been in a fresh water lake since new and has been meticulously maintained by one owner. The test sail went well. The sails are in terrific shape. I did notice engine vibration while motoring at various RPM's though. I'm told the engine hours (no meter) are around 200-300. This boat has a feathering prop and minimal leakage at the packing gland. Not sure what the cause of the vibration is yet. At some point the aluminum holding and fuel tanks with the original hoses will need to be updated. No signs of ever leaking to this point. All systems aboard are in working order including the refrigeration. We are having it hauled out next week for a survey. Any of you 33.5 owners have specific concerns I should mention to the surveyor? We have settled on $55,000 pending a good survey. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Jeff

Great price!

We had a small leak where the rudder post comes through the hull but that was after we put the davits on and sunk the backend a couple of inches.. We have had our 1993, 33.5 new and love it.. we are living about now for 1 year and have made many upgrades. But as the boat comes stock it is well put together. No leaks on top, just check the toe rail bolts.. Head hoses are easy to replace, Just heat the new ends before you try to put them on.. Not many blisters for a boat that never leaves the water. Steel keel and does show rust but so what... Nonlinear

33.5 Concerns

Hi Jeff, I own a 1990 33.5 and love the boat. The only thing I have found that needs attention on this boat is the aluminum water tank under the v-berth will finally corrode and leak. Also, the ball valves on my thru-hull's are in need of replacement. Other than that, you are getting a great deal on that boat, pending a good survey. Our 33.5 was priced at $55,000 and we bought it for $45,000 and waived the survey. Good Luck, fair winds and smooth seas, Brent Headberg S/V Elena Lua http://www.elenalua.homestead.com

Good Deal

Hi Jeff, We've had a 1992 33.5 for three and a half years and love it. We've sailed all over the Pacific Northwest on it including cruises up to three weeks at a time. It's very comfortable for the two of us for the extended cruises and great for two couples over weekends. She's handled a wind range up to 35 knots with no problems and waves up to 9 feet. We've had no serious mainteance problems. Go for it! Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

vibe

Could be a worn cutlass bearing, a bent or unevenly worn prop (re-balancing will fix that), incomplete feathering function on the prop, a bent prop shaft, or lastly it could just be that the prop shaft needs alignment w/the engine. Can be a combination of the above. Oh, as dumb as this may sound...make sure the engine mount nuts/bolts are not loose.

Vibes

As mentioned there are numerous causes for vibes from engine etc. Our cause in a H280 we recently purchased was the cutlass bearing had just a slight amount of wear that could be felt(by hand) when boat was hauled. Hopefully, you may find that simpler solution to be yours. Congrats on the new boat, know you'll enjoy it! Smooth sailing-Pete

Buying a 33.5

I echo the other sentiments of 33.5 owners. I won a 1992 33.5 (purchased on 2000) and really like the way the boat sails. I bought this (Legend) on the basis of my experiences with a 1994 37.5 Legend that I owned with a partmer. My wife and I wanted to downsize (slightly) to a boat that is easier to sail by "11/2" people. We were not disappointed. The only reservation that I have is the steel keel (ugh!) Plan on spending time each spring grinding the rust away and epoxy coating before putting on bottom paint. Other than that, I cannot think of any downsides, other than small size of bilge pump and lack of manual bilge pump. Good luck with the purchase.
