Help me understand recoats

I was just told that I would have to sand down my hard paint if I want to put on an abalative paint. And since I only have one coat of bottom paint over my barrier coat I'll need two coats this year? What are the advantages or disadvantages of the hard paint? If I want to re-apply hard paint, Do I need to sand it?(other than loose stuff)

You can put ablative over hard paint

You can put ablative over hard paint. I used to put hard paint in one color and then ablative in another. That way when the ablative was getting thin I would still have some protection and know that I needed to repaint. Check the bottom and if the existing paint is well attached a light sanding is usually all that is needed. If you have several years of old paint that is flakeing off then you need to sand. That is why I like ablatives. Pressure wash and a little light sanding is usually all that is needed to get ready to paint. A friend had his boat out one morning put on two coats of paint and put it back in the next morning. Tom
