A4 exhaust leak - Hot side

I have a fresh water cooled A4 that I recently discovered has a leak in the hot side of the exhaust, above the water injection to the water-lift muffler. The exhaust exits the engine turns up about 6-8 inches then horizontally for about 10 inches then down to the water injection and the top of the Centek water-lift muffler. What I saw when the engine was running was water spewing like a fountain from the 90 degree elbow joint where it connects to the horizontal sectionleading back towards the engine. There was also exhaust fumes in the cabin. I went back today to start removing parts and make repairs. I found the oil was milky. My question for some of you experienced with this setup is: with a good sized split in the exhaust pipe, was this enough to reduce the pressure and allow the muffler to overflow with cooling water? I'm assuming this is what was happening and that when the engine was shut down, some of the water rolled back down the exhaust into the engine. The engine didn't seize and freely turns. The muffler was clean inside and not clogged. I didn't confirm it, but the wet exhaust hose should be clear as it usually has a healthy burp of water when the engine is running.

My intention is to replace the hot side of the muffler, change the oil 2-3 times, & squirt some marvel mystery oil into each cylinder. Is there anything else I should check?

+1 on Moyer.

I bought their water injection fitting and manifold flange gasket and built the rest of the hot section on my C30 with iron pipe bought from McMaster Carr. Not a budget breaker and nice having new stuff.

Sounds like you are on the right track with the oil change.

Would change the oil asap if it were me.... Even if you can't run the engine to warm it up I would want as much water out / displaced as possible.

Good luck!
