A sad sad day

That is sad. I was aboard the Sara in 1962 when we skirted a hurricane out in the Atlantic and took solid water over the bows.

Also, only carrier in the US Navy, sunk by her own crew, in her own home port. She was lying Mayport, and while the scuttle valves were being worked on, someone, by accident, opened the wrong one!!! She only when down about 6 feet, but still!!!!

Well, at least they made mine a museum instead of razor blades. USS Kidd DD661, Baton Rouge La................rode out Hurricane Catrina tied to the pier, while the new Kidd DDG 100 was blown off her stands while being built with 1 mil damage! Was invited and attended the DDG 100's commissioning in Galviston Texas in 2007. Chief

SP,

great idea for a thread pal.

Having adopted the moniker of Captnron, I feel it my duty to add the following:

1. My flag is now flying at half mast.

2. knowing the movie character, was there any proof the he did in fact, even steer the, "Mighty SARA"? thru the Panama Canal; I think knot.

3. Do I feel I am somewhat like Captain Ron? You will need but ask my boating friends for their opinions.

4. Knowing this, do you feel I am the right material to be a Yacht Club member? I KNOW knot!

The pier in Newport looks naked without her. It was very sad watching her leave.

I wonder if they hired a Professional Captain, or they just decided to hire a Local???

SP,

In the movie, they WENT with a LOCAL "cap-I-tayn".
Look how that turned out!

However on the bright side, without this, there wouldn't have been a screenplay.

Thanks for sharing the ship stories. Being near Ingalls Shipyard, I have over the years seen a few. The USS Iowa (of turret explosion infamy) came in once for a refit, and the USS Cole was here for post attack repairs. Saw them both from the water. Went aboard the USS Mississippi when it was decommissioned. Had made arrangements to see the launch of the new submarine by the same name, but had other obligations. Would have been nice.

Kind of sad to see the big ladies get scrapped.
Both of the boats I served on are long gone. No idea what fate befell the 1st one, USS Haddo (SSN-604) but the USS Flying Fish (SSN-673) had the superstructure and control surfaces used in some kind of "peace park".

It's great to hear stories from the Veterans. God Bless all of you.

If you ever get to Baltimore there is a WWII Liberty Ship that still sails on the bay for public events. It is quite an experience. We were actually attacked by vintage Japanese Zero's and B5N torpedo bombers, and "saved" by the brave US Navy Armed Guard onboard (firing "live" ammo), and a vintage P-51 Mustang along with a B-25 Mitchell bomber in the air.

One of my greatest experiences was taking my Dad, a WWII Veteran, on this trip. He had actually been on a Liberty Ship during the war.

Also, USS Constellation CV-64, departed Puget Sound Naval Shipyard August 8, 2014 on a four month voyage to the same Brownsville salvage yard. There she will join USS Forrestal CV-59 and USS Saratoga CV 60. USS Ranger CV-61 and USS Independence CV-62 are also at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and are scheduled for the same scrap yard in Texas. USS Kitty Hawk C-V 63, also at PSNS remains in ready reserve. USS Enterprise CVN-65 was decommissioned in Dec 2012 and is undergoing a lengthy deactivation period after which the plan is to tow her to PSNS for scrapping. USS America CV-66 was sunk after extended testing of various explosions designed to see how future carriers could be better built. She was deliberately scuttled in 17,500 feet of water off the Virginia coast in May of 2005. As a personal footnote, of the four carriers I served on including Independence, Nimitz and Eisenhower, America was the best.

And as the Panama Canal is 110' wide and the carrier hull is 130' wide and the flight deck nominally 252' wide, the towed route is around Cape Horn.

I take day charters out of Buffalo and pass the USS Little Rock & the USS Sullivans each trip. I tell the story of both vessels as we pass. I am always amazed at the number of guests who do not know the history of the USS Sullivans. It is a shame.
