So Sorry to hear this ...

How disheartening and sad. My thoughts and prayers for recovery are with you, your Marina owners (Jack & Elenor) as well. My hopes are that despite your loss, you remain on these boards and hold on to the hope that something good will come your way. I thought that I was doomed back in 04 when we came under sever hurricane attacks. Charley did most of the damage. Drove my MAC25 into a pileon and crushed her nose. Ripped off a support stancheon and ripped free the stern ladder assembly. Hauled her out and took an entire year to restore her back to original shape. Tom

Not alot of notice

I'm farther north on the Chesapeake and we didn't get an accurate forecast on Ernesto either. It was supposed to go farther west and bring us showers and light winds. Luckily, I was able to take friday off and get down to my boat. Nature called when I got there which was a good thing. The winds weren't too bad and she was riding well. I went below to use the head. A good (if there is such a thing) gust hit and, "whonk", she bounced off a piling. That settled that and I re-rigged all lines, going from my usual six to fourteen total. We ended up with steady 40 mph plus winds and gusts in the upper 50's, low sixties. My slip is pretty sheltered so there wasn't much wave action. We did get a 4 foot or so storm surge. My 11pm check revealed the docks under water, lines holding with enough slack for the tides. I was fortunate to be able to check on her and get her settled in. It made for a long night of trips to the boat. It's six miles one way, but well worth the effort. I wouldn't have slept well anyway. Sorry for your loss. It's easy to say there are alot more 25's out there, but it's not the same. -John

it still floats

The boat is badly scraped on the sides, bottom and top of the cockpit area,,a foot square area above the waterline cracked through,,the main sail distroyed,,The mast and rigging is fine,I will put it back on the trailer when the marina gets the many tons of lumber and etc.off of the ramps,,then I can tell the bottom damage,,my boat is a very small part of this deal,,the marina and the owners lives are forever changed,They managed to stay opened after Isabell 2 years ago,,this looks to be the final blow to a lovely marina and perfect sailing area,My heart and prayers are with them,,Jack & Elenor,

Bad forecasting!

Sure sorry to hear about your boat. It was just dumb luck that I escaped with only a broken seat hinge on my MacGregor 26M, and about 8 trees in my yard. The forecasters were WAY OFF and apparently have admitted that their model did not take into account the high pressure area north of Ernesto that combined with it to produce near hurricane winds and accompanying high water. I was standing in 60+ MPH gusts listening to the radio say Ernesto was peaking at 35 MPH! The Lewisetta area looks as bad or worse than with Isabel and the Coan River Marina suffered a huge amount of damage with sailboats grounded, broken, piled on top of each other, with a large amount of destroyed pier/pilings! Many owners were caught by surprise at the intensity of the storm and a LOT of boats could have been saved with better forecasting! I hope the weatherman does better next time around!
