What the hell Do I do with a bell? Stand on the bow And ring it in fog? Or ring it whenever I want to terrorize the dog? Coast Guard says I need one for the boat And safety at sea Always gets my vote. Had a bell before It laid in a heap Rang it once to hear it Cause it wasn’t cheap Have you ever Stood on the bow And rung that bell As hard as you know how? Thinking above logic That it certainly would work. To avert that collision With that power boat jerk? Or as that freighter approaches Dark in the night. Do you stand up and ring With all of your might? Been boating for years Will someone please tell What in the hell Do I do with a bell? Thanks!

Just an outdated regulation!

Bruce: I took mine apart and stowed it in a cabinet. It is there if the coasties ever need to do their inspection.

Bells, Bells

We have ours on a mount in the cabin. It looks nice next to the chronometer and barometer. We have a second mounting bracket on the wood piece that holds the outboard motor on the pulpit. I can rig and ring the bell and use it from behind the wheel. It is helpful in fog, when I am motoring slowly and the engine is quieter. Came across a tug and barges one day, heard his bell, don't know if he heard mine.

Is a bell required for your boat?

Our bell, engraved with vessel name and date, is mounted on the forward side of the pedestal. Great and easy to clang for fog. Also great and easy to clang to mark the passing hours of each watch (thereby annoying everyone else in the anchorage who perhaps do not want to keep track of time). But seriously -- how big is your boat? The rules state that a bell is not required on a vessel less than 12 meters in lenght. Of course, if yours is longer than 100 meters then you must have both a bell and a gong.
