On the port side of the mast on my 85-285 down low, two wire ropes come out. They are just curled up but what are they for? Thanks in advance, Rick

28.5 Rigging

I've had an '86 28.5 since new and there was no original equipment wire rope rigging and no halyards at all on the port side. The double braid main and Genoa halyards were on the starboard side led thru a double sheave line organizer to the only cabintop winch. I'd check for other evidence of add ons by the previous owner such as a second cabintop winch and line organizer on the port side, which may indicate provisions for a second Genoa Halyard. A spinnaker halyard or spinnaker pole topping lift wouldn't need wire rope, but those are the only running rigging components I can think of that might be run internal in the mast.

H28.5 Rigging

I, too, have an '86 H28.5 with no lines coming out of the double sheave box on the port side at the base of the mast. If you have wire ropes/lines coming out of yours, you may want to try tracing the other ends and that may give you a clue. If they go up the inside of the mast, they most likely come down the outside of the mast and terminate somewhere on deck. Lots of possibilities.

28.5 rigging

Blue Seiche has 2 lines exiting both port & starboard base of mast: [port] jib halyard and topping lift, [starboard] main halyard and starboard jib halyard. All lines are led aft to cockpit through deck organizers and through clutches. Spin halyard is run external of mast, the topping lift exits mid-mast and the other 3 lines exit via sheaves @ top of mast. Next time up the mast I'll remember to take a picture so I won't have to remember how this looks!
