Hi, I?m a knew member to this forum just purchasing a used O?day 222(84). The boat looks pretty nice, very solid well built, good quality in hardware and design. Can?t wait for the spring. My first question about the boat is the design of the main sheet pulley /cam lock assembly being tied to the backstay. It seems like it puts unneeded pressure on the backstay. I have seen pictures of 222?s having the assembly attaching just rear of the cabin entrance. The later design picture was from the side of the boat so the actual connection point is unclear. So long way around the barn but is there a problem with the standard design? Thanks Bob

There is no problem with the standard design. My brother in law had this set up on his boat, and it kept the clutter of the main sheet out of the way. You talk about an attachment point just aft of the companionway... this is usually a traveller set up. It give you more versatility in changing wind conditions and allows you move it to windward to point a few degrees higher, and in higher wind conditions can be let down to give less heel, with the same power. Both systems work well. It is always a compromise between ease of sailing and performance.

I have an '84 222...
with the same original rig. It is very handy to have the main sheet out of the way. A traveler over the companionway on this boat would be a real head knocker. I spent all last season wondering if I needed to rig a traveler. I found I could pretty much get away without it using a combination of a boom vang and the main sheet. I didn't sense any un-reasonable stress on the back stay even while sailing in some pretty stiff breezes. You'll love the 222. It sails really well. Great cabin for a 22 footer. I think a must have imporvement is to get rid of the original "Small Boat Furler" and put one on that can reef the headsail. I'd do that before spending $$$ on a traveler. Have fun with her!
