Why is this so Misspelled?
It is a Nautical Term
Mispelled for years, making many people think is is mispoken and or mispronounced
A long rode to ho.
It is not mispronounced it is misspelled.
Rode is a length of chain and rope that is put out from the ship to the anchor. A long rode is required when it is windy or stormy. To pull a rope on a ship is to ho. Hence the term "Heave Ho" the group will advance on the rope on the command Heave and pull on the command Ho. If it is stormy and or windy the long rode to ho is hard work and takes a long time to acomplish.
Invision Popeye saying "It's a long rode to ho." Now doesn't that make a lot more sence?

OK, I'll give ya that but in agrarian terms it is a "long row to hoe" from the times when people used hoes (the long wood handle with a blade on the end, not a street walker) to chop weeds out of the cotton crops that are grown on raised dirt rows.. A big cotton field would have many long rows to hoe before all the weeds and cockleburrs were out of the growing cotton.. It may have developed from the nautical terms..??

As a teenager I worked on a farm in the summers. We use hoes to weed in the cotton and soybean fields. All the rows were long. No ocean in sight.

I've also heard, "you have a tough row to hoe", as in the ground was full of rocks or roots, which meant whatever your intended plan or course was, you will have difficulties in doing so.

Puh-leez. This is complete bullsh*t. Remember that Wikipedia is populated with submissions from regular people, many of whom are idiots. As previously mentioned, the phrase is, "A long row to hoe," and it comes from farming, not sailing.

Spelling DOES count

I think we've all seen that internet message/email that had two or three paragraphs with every word completely and deliberately misspelled, yet we could all read and understand it.

It was intended to show that spelling doesn't count anymore.

Nonsense!

Think about it: ya need to spell correctly to do a SEARCH on the internet or any search engine.

And I'm lead to understand that certain historical records on wikipedia are being deliberately changed by certain political establishment folks - and it ain't the left wing, either...

And I'm very surprised that no one expressed societal concern about the use of the word "ho". :naughty:

Not enough folks online from Berkeley I guess.

Hey, zeehag, what needs to be fixed now?

stu--i got a formosa-- formosa my life she will need something fixed or repaired-- mebbe she was made by ford..LOL..
i have to do some sail repairs and some electrical repairs , add a transducer and map chips for garmin 498, add more cabinet work, rig her for a forestaysail, find stuff n stuff n winches and other stuff.....
cruising is merely sailing from one place wherein one must await mother nature and fix a boat to another place wherein one must await mother nature as well as fix boat.....the sunrises and sunsets are just different and food is a lot cheaper .....LOL--so are boat parts and repairs....LOL many things are really absurdly high in usa.
but the engine is about perfect ... for the moment....
