Leaving New London Connecticut, motored directly into the wind for 3nm, around buoy turned to port, set sail and smooth sailing to Newport harbor for the Japanese Black ship festival. A good take, sushi and sumo wrestling demonstrations. 2005 will have the festival again around July 15th. Anyone have some good sailing spots? I'm in the process of planning my spring/summer trips.

Figawi 2005

May 28-30th, Hyannis to Nantucket- Figawi race. Lots of events parties, ect. Good race similar to beer can racing but on a bigger scale. Usually over 200 boats there.

I have a few...

William, I grew up boating on LI Sound & there are a LOT of fun places to hit. Here are a few: 1. Sag Harbor - Great place to either drop the hook or get a slip. Cool whaling town within walking distance. Olaf ice creat that's out of this world. Nice, secure harbor, too. If you have a dinghy there's a small creek worth checking out to go claming. 2. Coccles Harbor, Dering Harbor, Three Mile Harbor. - Not much in either of these, but they're a great place to drop the hook & go for a swim. Nice clean water, very sheltered, great place to take in a relaxing night at anchor. 3. Montaulk - Nepauge Harbor is another nice anchorage. Check the depth, though, some places are shallow. Dinghy to shore & walk about 1 mile to get to the south shore of Long Island for a great beach with high surf. 4. Block Island - I prefer New Harbor for a secure place to anchor, away from the wakes of the ferries. It's going to be crowded on the weekend in the summer, but there are a lot of cool places to check out on shore. Rent bikes or walk around to see shops, restaurants, pubs. I hope this helps! I sorely miss those waters. There are so many little nooks & crannies to explore. Enjoy!! Allen Schweitzer s/v Falstaff C-30 Hull #632

William Your address says Cape Cod, but your post says New London as the departure point. Either way I have had great sails to from Bass River in Dennis to Quisett, the wonderful little harbor on the east side of Buzzards Bay. People also swear by Cuttyhunk. And through the canal and over to Wellfleet Harbor is fun, if you make a reservation for a mooring. Also a nice, safe harbor. Then you get the fun of sailing back! Just use your Eldrige's current tables to carefully plan canal and/or Wood's Hole transits. Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, of course, if you can spend the bucks for the multi-day stay minimums (or you are OK looking to anchor your C30 in kind of exposed spots) My trips were all in a C27. Enjoy! Roger

Woods Hole

we usually spend a couple of days in Woods hole. the WHYC has moorings available in Great harbor. Call only not radio. they will take reservations. Skip is th ecommadore. not much for services at the WHYC since its a primary teaching YC but they have a dinghy dock you can tie up to and an easy walk to town. lots of good restraurants. WHOI has a museum and MBL has a decent aquarium. also a big fan of Westport. the twin brances of the Westport river are fun exploring. kind of a laid back little community. great food at the Back Eddy. Both Cutty Hunk and Block are fun, but are getting crowded even off weekends. Marion is another nice easy in/out port. lots of morrings available. have fun. Bryce S/V Spellbinder H410

Napeague, Allen?

I agree wholeheartedly with you but your spelling made me laugh.;D The last couple of summers I've been in there with my ski boat it was very shallow and we couldn't get across the bay. Tricky with the current for both channels in. The marked channel probably works best but it seems that both have gotten shallower (once you get into the bay) in recent years. It's a great windsurfing and kite sailing destination and you can rent or take lessons right on the beach near the harbor. Also, there is a nature walk in Hither Hills that you can take from the eastern shore (of Napeague)that has spectacular views. You didn't mention Montauk Harbor/Lake Montauk, I suppose because transient moorings are very expensive? Are there any anchorages in that harbor? What a great place with fantastic restaraunts! I've had the fresh clams that people gather in Napeague and they are delish! Just don't get caught without a permit (which you can't obtain if not a resident I think). It's a short trip to Block Island from there. A better place to sail has got to be hard to find!

thanks for the advice

thanks for the suggestions, I think I'll try block island. My mooring is in red brook harbor in buzzards bay, I bought the boat at a marina in new london, i can't wait to get back out on the sea. Many nice local spots, I should quit my job, before it begins to interfere with my sailing! Cal 33
