Looking to purchase a 27' ODay272, anyone have any experience with an A Frame for a 27' or larger?

Here is an A-Frame system that I've used on my Catalina 27 mast. It worked very good, but be careful to use a quality 2x4. The first time I used this system one of the 2x4s had a knot that created a weak spot on the board and it snapped. I replaced the board with a good 2x4 and I've since used the system three times with no problems.

Good Luck,
BILL

I have used an "A" frame for the mast on my 30 foot Islander. The most difficult part has been stabilizing the "A" frame so that it didn't offer to come down with the mast. mine was probably over engineered but for overhead hoisting I am very cautious.

One you get above 25', using an A-frame gets a bit trickier, due to the increased size and mass of the mast. It can be done, but the base of the A-frame has to be very well secured.

Ross do you have any diagrams of your rig? Or could you give some detail?

Thanks, Ted

Ted, I haven't used this for several years and have it parked under the back porch. The pictures show the top end only. It is set up about 4 feet forward of the mast and the wirerope guys are taken to hard points on the toe rail and tightened with turnbuckles. I tie a 1/2 inch anchor rode to my jib halyard and hoist the knot above the spreaders. The 1/2 inch line is lead to a 4 inch turning block at the stem head fitting and from there back to a two speed winch.. I take a light pull on the 1/2 inch line and let the forestay go and also the lower forward shrouds. The lower aft and upper shrouds are left taut. When all is ready Nancy eases the line at the winch and I push the mast over backwards as the mast come down I guide the 1/2 inch line into the top of the "A" frame where it bears on the sheaves. From that point on Nancy controls the lowering and I keep the foot of the mast under control. If it should kick out it could whip forward and inflict all manner of mischief to people and boat. When the mast is fully down then I shift it forward to a point where it is stable. The halyard is left in place for raising the mast later. As the mast is hoist care must be taken to not foul the shrouds.

Having trouble attaching a pix.
