A few questions on the 26M or 26X

Hello! We've been planning on getting a new 26X. For weekend cruising in and around the Great Lakes. Here's a few of my thoughts on the package. Not buying a jib, just use the genoa with roller furling. Not buying the spinaker, again thinking the genoa is a big multi-purpose sail. If we wanted a spinaker later, 2nd or 3rd year, it might be fun to have one custom made, (read custom colors). Not buying the stock bimini but having one custom made, with full coverage, and full dodgers when you want them. And finally, buying a motor separately and installing it myself. I've worked with lots of wood, several fiberglass boat overhauls, and plenty of engines. None of this is just to be cheap, it is an attempt to buy only what we won't want to replace in the future, and have more funds now to customize. Of course, all of that pertains to a Mac 26X, and we just found out about the M. Has anyone seen one in person? Are they showing them at boat shows? The changes IE daggerboard, rotating mast, different interior have us a little creeped out. At least, we wonder about the wisdom of buying one sight unseen. Thanks, Jd

On the 26X

When I bought my 26X I bought the roller-furling genoa. The jib sail was thrown in by the dealer. I have never used it. I don't believe I ever will except in an emergency if I blow out my Genoa and even then, how do you get it up over a roller furled blown out genoa? I bought my motor seperately. I purchased it in Canada (saved $1000 due to the Canadian Dollar weakness). I agree with your idea of not buying a stock bimimi. I wish I had purchased mine seperately too.

Look it over..........

If you liked the 26X but are now considering a 26M, but have not seen the 26M, be sure to FIND a 26M and look it over. There are some significant differences for you to consider. I for one would never but anything sight unseen. Good Luck and Happy Sailing, Vince

Do your research

Do your research, JD. I thought some of the same things before buying my 26x. However, after doing my research I found that the cost savings on the engine installation was minimal compared to the complexity of installing it correctly and the benefit of having the dealer warranty on the installation. Your idea about the genoa is sound. My jib is buried somewhere. I don't get enough wind to make it useful. I bought the stock bimini, and I don't have any complaints. It was cheaper than anything else I found. I've seen the 26M. I think its a pretty nice boat, though I'm not going to sell my 26x to buy one. It's got some nice designer touches; cherry wood and beige interior. Personally, I like the blue hull, but not the twin blacked out windows. The M seems cramped in the cockpit, and the porta-potty cannot be used for business AND privacy. You've got to get out to do your clean up. Even on a day sail, the M might seem cramped for four people when compared to the X. I love the rear berth in the M, and hate the rear berth in my X. After modifications, I like the galley in the X, while the galley in the M seems wasted. I don't like the fact that the M's transom is so narrow, you can't use it to enter or exit if you have a 50+hp engine. I really like the transom set up in the X. It's easy to use with the swim ladder. I wasn't impressed with the rotating mast or the traveler on the M. I question the reliability of the rotating mast, and I question the location of the traveler--right in front of the companion way. I like the fact that the M has a better sailing hull and more sail area. My dealer sailed an M side by side with an X, and he said the M gained about 1 foot every minute on the X. That might be a substantial difference to some people. Good luck. I hope you get the boat of your dreams.

Nex 26M

I have not seen the 26M personally, but I have received some publicity from the Spanish Mac Gregor dealer. They have created a Web to publicise the boat. This web is: http://www.arrakis.es/~dicodi/catalogo/MacGregor26M_archivos/frame.htm Have a nice look, Miquel
