Garmin 72 and certain problems I was having with it. The cure for the problems was to disable WAAS. I was a bit concerned about a loss of accuracy but I can tell you that as a result of road testing the loss in accuract is not significant. Drove from home to my slip today and arrived within about 50 feet distance 16 nm. drove home to my driveway and came within 52 feet.

Does this mean...

you stopped 52 feet from your driveway and had to ask for directions? Its not like I havent done that before. Tony B

TonyB, At the end of my driveway the gps said I had 120 feet to go

my driveway is 50 feet from the road to the door. When I parked It search for a minute and decided that 52 feet was as close as was needed. If I couldn't take it from there well-------------. ;D

50 feet of inaccuracy is a pretty long way in a fog

Or if you happen to be in a foggy state of mind and can't handle the last few feet. Very funny TonyB! I remember (not really) sleeping on a porch of the house next door to my girlfriends one night when in college (back in the dark ages of the late 1970's). I think the people whose porch I slept on were more frightened of me the next morning then I was of them. Since then I steer well clear of the Jack Daniels Shoal even though it does not show up on the GPS.

You guys remember the John Wayne movie

Donovan's reef? Sometimes I run aground in a place like that. Even GPS is no cure for that.

WAAS will get you down to about 20ft. accuracy which can be significant compared to 50ft. I posted this to your other thread. This update should fix your problems. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=227

TimR,If I understand this I can down load the updates

to my computer and from the computer to the GPS via a data cable. Is that how that will work?

Yes Ross

That is exactly how it will work. It is pretty easy but you can also get Garmin on the phone to assist. They have great tech support.

Amazing!

Earlier this week I was following this thread with mild interest because I also have a Garmin 72 that I have used for several years. I made a mental note about the topic in case it ever happened to me. Today I took the boat out for the first time this year and guess what.... a blank screen with a vertical blue line appeared! All fixed tonight as outlined below. My only question. The unit is quite old and the software patch is very new. Is the timing all just total coincidence or is there something that is causing this to happen at the present time?

From the Garmin site it is apparent that there have been several

upgrades since the release of the Garmin GPS 72. This is just the latest. The tech that I talked with said that The problem is from trying to determine which WAAS station(s) to work from and the unit gets into an endless loop. I will post details on the down load when I do it.

Garmin 72 Software Upgrade

This task was very easy.... but you must have the special cable. Just follow the instructions on the Garmin update site. The GPS unit first needs to be placed in Simulator mode and there was one other setting that needed to be checked (forgot which one but I did not have to change anything) and it was all exceedingly smooth.

waypoints lost with upgrade?

When you do the software upgrade do you lose the waypoints you have stored in the GPS?

You should not

But I would(and do) back them up first.
