I came up with this small modification on my O'Day 222 years ago after trying to get my 48 quart cooler in that area behind the step, which was a real bear that involved removing the Starboard Settee cushions, and sliding the cooler behind that spot in back of the step. I used pine to mock up a rough template of the design that was later to be finished in Teak. Cutting the holes in the fiberglass where the step was secured, took a little bravery because there would be no turning back after this point. I used a table saw and a bevel to get the angles. The holes in the fiberglass are cut with a design that only allows the step to be mounted one way, only. Two stainless Steel adjusters secure the step and makes it very solid. Now, I'm able to remove the step and lift my 50 quart cooler over and into the area behind the step. The step is then reinserted into position. It seems to be a very solid mount with no possibility of failure.

I've been considering the same thing

Joe, I've been thinking of doing the same thing (for the same reason). More often than not I end up leaving the cooler back there (which doesn't do much for the cleanliness of the cooler). I was thinking of a hinged solution, but this looks great too. Thanks for the pic. - Chuck D
