We are experiencing problems with our A/C. The return ices over and then the compressor shuts down. It only happens when the ambient temperature is 15-20 degrees warmer than cabin temp. We live aboard our boat in N Florida so this time of year we experience many days of 95 degree or higher temps. It would be more comfortable if we could cool the cabin below 80. The unit is a Mermaid Air 16,000 BTU Reverse Cycle. Have contacted Mermaid on several occasions. They have been more than willing to help but so far none of their suggestions helped. Anyone else have this problem? The boat is a 37.5.

duct work

A major cause of a/c iceing up is that that unit is not ducted properly. Is this a new installation or did it work correctly at one time?If I remember correctly you need a minmium of 20 square inchs of duck work for that size unit to "breath". I would have thought the factory tech rep would have mentioned this but just in case there is something to check on.

Low freon

Low freon and dirty filters can both cause the unit to freeze up. If it does freeze up, go into heat mode to melt the ice.. should only take a couple of minutes and then see if will conitune to cool the cabin. Brian
