So it looks like the inverter idea won't work to run the air conditioner. Is there such a thing as a engine mounted AC generator for the boat engine? If I have to put a gas generator on board, where can it be mounted?

Have never seen one but .................

Bill, I've never seen a generator that could be mounted (bolted ?) to the engine but................. Since the generator is turned by a gasoline engine I suppose SOMETHING could be built to do it however; the problem you're going to run into is this. Generators are built so that the load on the generator controls the throttle on the engine (you've seen where they just idle until a load is put on them and then the engine speeds up). This 'connection' would be the most difficult and Diesels seem to run best at constant speeds rather than up and down the RPM range all the time so.............................. Not sure I'd try it but it is an interesting engineering problem !!!!!!!!!!

There WAS..

..an AC engine mounted generator. I don't recall ever seeing one other than in an article, but I do know they are/were larger than a big foot high output alternator by my recollection. So, probably not practical in today's tight engine compartments. You might just prowl around the generator component manufacturers to see. Good luck, RD

336 Genset

I added a 4KW genset to my 336 in the Port Side aft lazerette. You have to use some quiet insulation but a deisel genset works just fine. Kept us cool and warm on the hook. There are several on the market that will work.

AC generator.

I looked at an engine mounted AC generator once. Apart from size, is was very expensive, since it needed circuitry to compensate for varying engine speeds. How come the inverter didn't work? Was it big enough for the surge load at the compressor start up?

not a bit on the mechanics, but how does a car A/C work come on Landau do you stuff

Assume you mean car air conditioning as opposed to AC (alternating current - 'cause there is no AC in cars, it's all 12V DC). Car uses the engine to drive the compressor via an electric clutch and the compressor uses a LOT of the engines power (at idle there usually is a solenoid to advance the throttle if the clutch engages the compressor !!). The only other thing to speak of is the blower (12V and a LOT of amps)
