I just purchased a 2000 Hunter 340 and I am having A/C installed this winter. The question is what size of unit 12,000 or 16,000 btu? I think O.E. from Hunter is 12,000 but when I do the math it comes out 16,000. I will be sailing on the lower Great Lakes most of the time.

Bigger is Better

Get the bigger unit. We have 12,000 and its not quite enough to keep aft cabin cool all nite. We thought 12,000 sounded like alot. Also, we added a vent in the head (did the work ourselves). Definetly makes a difference when yu are just using the head or for a shower. I dont't know why it isnt standard to put the vent there. Helen Pshedesky s/v Silent 'P'

Check the archives

Sugggest you check the archives. There has been extensive discussion of this topic. By all means, install the 16,000 btu system. In my part of the country, mid-Missouri, a 12k unit couldn't cool the boat down and keep it cool during our hot summer days. Your unit would be running all the time. I sure is nice to see so many new 340 owners out there. Nice boat, isn't it? Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility H340

Chill Out!

Go with the 16K unit. It keeps the boat nice in cool in the summer and very warm come winter time. I have a vent in foward berth, over nav station, and in aft berth. The unit works very well. Should you have specific questions E-Mail me at Sailing84@aol.com. Good Luck!

But Wynn and Helen . . . and Jay

So how do much extension cord do you need for the A/C when you anchor out? <grin>. Okay, I'm jealous since my 340 doesn't have A/C yet . . . Jim

16000 btu

I believe this is the standard size from the factory, call Hunter and they will tell you or there is a formula for size based on hull, deck, and height 16000 will give you more heat if you get a ac/heat type unit.

A/C size

I have a 12,000 btu unit in my 98 340. It does a reasonable job in the summer in North Carolina. However, it is very hard to cool the boat when the boat is in the direct sun. I got a reversible unit, which works great in the winter as a heater. In fact I think the heater function is better than the cooling. If you can fit a 16,000 unit, you will be better off in the hot weather.
