Fed up w/ personal attacks I'm done with SBO
Friends,

As some of you know, quite a few years ago I built a Westsail 32 "From a Bare Hull" as the popular book was titled. It was sold in the divorce from Hell in 1990, three years after she was launched. The construction took slightly over three years, 1984 - 1987.

I sold her to a nice couple in Myrtle Beach, they renamed her Aloha and eventually sold her to someone in Virginia. I lost track after that. The last I saw her was in 1990 in her new berth in Coquina Harbor, Myrtle Beach.

The only pictures I have are the rejects. The ex kept the albums (of course). Some of these pictures are posted in my profile area on this forum.

The last few years I've made feeble attempts to find her again or any information about her. You pour your soul into something like that and it sticks with you. And then I stumbled across this:

That's her, in Malaysia! At least she got to cross oceans albeit without me. She looks pretty much as I built her on the inside. The bulkhead planking is maple, the trim, doors and drawers are teak, the sole is teak and ash, the counters are oak and the table top is herringbone walnut with inlays of padauk. I'd know her anywhere. There sure is a bunch of stuff on the outside but I guess that's what a serious cruising boat is supposed to look like.

I get a lump in my throat looking at the pics, wanted to share.

You can be doubly pleased. She has been well kept and has seen a good deal of ocean.

There's one on Ebay as I type this. project boat of course, the owner died or something

FWIW, that's a GREAT DEAL!! There's at least $40K worth of parts sitting there.

Not for me though. I look at my previous boat like an old girlfriend, you can never go back. I'd rather enjoy the good memories. Besides, I'm thoroughly happy with my current boat. It's not a world cruiser but that's a dragon I no longer need to slay.

Thanks for sharing. She's a beautiful boat with a lot of soul, no ice-box look there. The interior pictures show a lot of care and work.

Thank you, all.

There was - and still is I believe - a general disdain for owner or amateur built boats. I've seen total hack jobs, beautifully built boats and everything in between. I'd say to anyone listening before you summarily dismiss an owner built boat, have a closer look. It might be a real gem.

Not only is there such a disdain for owner built boats there is also a scornful attitude about rebuilding GRP boats. Many people will spend years and dollars bringing a wooden boat back for the chainsaws and receive plaudits but the person who spends an equal amount of effort and dollars on a plastic boat will be told ,"You could have gotten into the water 5 years sooner if you had just spent x dollars more on a ready to sail.
